The Original Series is my favorite show of the Trek franchise. I imprinted young when I developed a crush on Captain Kirk at eleven. At it's best it could be amazing, and featured scripts by science fiction talents such as Theodore Sturgeon and Harlan Ellison. And that first season featured among the very best episodes the show ever produced--and both of these episodes would be contenders in best of lists.

"City on the Edge of Forever" is considered among the best and most moving episodes the original series ever produced--and based on a script by Harlan Ellison. There famously was controversy over that script; Ellison was up in arms about the changes made. From what I heard of his original conception, much was too expensive to shoot, not in the spirit of the show, and had Captain Kirk acting out of character. But one part of his original conception I wish had been preserved. Edith Keeler is not supposed to be beautiful, making Joan Collins hopelessly miscast. But this was one of Shatner's best performances--not one moment did I find him over the top or cheesy. There's this moment at the end where his expression is absolutely devastating, and this is one of the standout episodes for his character.

Unlike "City," the episode "Errand of Mercy" isn't a contender for top five, or maybe even top ten--but it's a good episode and noteworthy for introducing the Klingons. ( )
