Selten habe ich ein Buch gelesen, durch das ich mich so gequält habe. Das Buch ist zweifelsohne gut geschrieben und klug beobachtet. Aber die Handlung ist so deprimierend und hoffnungslos, dass es einen einfach runterzieht.
Die Hauptpersonen sind das junge Ehepaar Isabelle und Jakob. Beide wirken seltsam farb- und charakterlos. Isabelle dient zwar als Projektionsfläche für einige Männer. Sie selbst aber ist als Person nicht greifbar, übernimmt keine Verantwortung. Mehrfach wird betont, wie kindlich sie aussieht und sich kleidet (z.B. in den immerwährenden Turnschuhen). Ich denke, das soll ebenfalls darstellen, dass sie eigentlich nicht erwachsen ist. Nun ziehen die beiden nach London, wo sie mit dem kriminellen Jim, Jakobs Chef Bentham und dem misshandelten Nachbarmädchen Sara konfrontiert werden. Die Tatsache, dass die beiden weder in sich selbst noch ineinander Halt haben, lässt sie immer weiter in seltsame, fast (alp)traumartige Begebenheiten finden. Doch trotz allem, was geschieht, sind die beiden bis zum Schluss nicht fähig sich zu positionieren und ihr Leben in die Hand zu nehmen.
Dass das Buch den Buchpreis gewonnen hat, kann ich eigentlich verstehen. Es porträtiert sehr anschaulich eine Generation, die materiell eigentlich alles hat, eigentlich auch keine Kümmernisse, von der nicht verlangt wird, Position zu beziehen und zu sich selbst zu stehen. Im Endeffekt wird das Leben erst interessant und spürbar, wenn Gewissheiten wegbrechen. Aber genau deshalb ist das Buch sehr trostlos. So richtig gern habe ich es nicht gelesen, obwohl es ein gutes Buch ist. ( )

Vermischt sich mit Politik und Privatleben, düsteres Spiegelbild unserer Gesellschaft und tolle Beschreibungen wie "Isabells helle Schulranzenstimme" ( )

It was the second time I read the book, and last year I just hated it. I gave it very low rating, but maybe that was not totally fair. Let's have another look at it: The story contains three "protagonist clusters":
(1) the newly wed couple Jacob and Isabelle from Germany, who met each other again on Sept 9, 2001 - after many years of separation. After Jacob's coworker died in the Twin Towers, he gets the chance to go to London.
(2) there's Jim, a violent criminal (drugs, theft) who (literally) struggles through life in London.
(3) there's Sara, a poor little girl, who's constantly neglected and physically abused by its parents.
During the story all the protagonists (all living in the same road) somehow cross the path of the others.

The whole book is a story about violence, cruelty, fear, death, and humiliation. Life is presented like a every-day-Guantanamo: people are imprisoned without any chance of getting out of this vicious circle. They don't know how to act human anymore, and aren't able to feel empathy for another person. Caught helplessly in some kind of moral black hole, they don't know "what to do". In addition to that they're frustrated, because during their whole life others pomised them a better life in some kind of paradise ("...a garden with a cherry tree"), which of course never got real.

I think I hated the book because it really pulled me down. It's just depressing (and it made me angry) to have to watch these protagonists watching others suffering. (In comparison to a movie you have to continue reading to see, if the protagonists might change their habits.) There are descriptions of violence in the book, which I personally just could not bear. In some parts the whole atmosphere is so intense, it could make you feel sick. (At least it made me feel sick.)

So, I have to admit that calling it a bad book isn't fair. Because it transports the topics and feelings very well, and it creates an atmosphere. But it's a heavy reading, - and still I'm not sure, if I would recommend it to anyone. ( )

J'avoue avoir du mal à me faire un jugement sur ce livre. L'histoire se veut réaliste mais ne me paraît pas vraiment crédible (ce qui n'est pas forcément grave, il est vrai). En même temps, j'ai eu un certain plaisir à lire ce roman, même si je n'ai certainement pas tout très bien saisi. J'ai trouvé les personnages attachants, même s'ils semblent enfermés en eux-mêmes et souvent insensibles aux autres. ( )
