In the summer of 1778, General Washington needed to know where the British would strike next. To that end, he unleashed an unlikely ring of spies in New York charged with discovering the enemy's battle plans. Washington's band included a young Quaker torn between political principle and family loyalty, a swashbuckling sailor addicted to the perils of espionage, a hard-drinking barkeep, a Yale-educated cavalryman, and a peaceful, sickly farmer who begged to let him retire but always came through in the end. Personally guiding these everyday heroes was Washington himself. In an era when officers were gentlemen, and gentlemen didn't spy, he possessed a talent for deception--and proved an adept spymaster. The men he mentored were dubbed the Culper Ring. Historian Rose tells an unknown story of the Revolution--the murderous intelligence war, gunrunning and kidnapping, defectors and executioners--that has never appeared in the history books.--From publisher description.… (más)

I had watched the series Turn! on television; this is the book that series was based on. Fascinating account of the often unwitting, ordinary people who got swept up in the intrigue and intelligence gathering during the Revolutionary War. ( )

I do not know why it took me so long to read this book — I’ve had it for at least two years, and I’ve watched (and loved) all four seasons of the show that is based upon this book (“Turn: Washington’s Spies”).
This was a quick 280 page read for me, and it really helped to deepen my understanding of the Culper Spy Ring. I definitely recommend it as a read for anyone interested in US history, espionage, or any other related topics; in actuality, I just highly recommend this book as a read for everyone. This book (along with the show, of course) will forever hold a special place in my heart. ( )

Amazing. I've studied the war for sometime but the story always had holes. Things that made no sense or seemed to good to be true. This book, and the insight into the men and women who worked behind the scenes and helped Washington stay that two steps ahead of the British, filled in those holes. A must read for anyone who really wants to understand how the war was fought. ( )

Finally finished this book -- it is very interesting but also rather dense. However, what I think is the most impressive is when you get to the images of the artifacts, seeing what the author and others had to work with to get to this story is just mind boggling.
And yes, the tv show is loosely based on this -- and I mean loosely, but it helped me get a better feel for the time period, what people may have looked like and some other contextual elements (in the hopes that it was all accurate). ( )

Well written and researched. The author really weaves a great tale from historical facts and draws the reader along into the intrigue. ( )
