This book follows the true story of Neftali Basoalto, better known as Pablo Naruda, a Chilean poet who used his work to fight for his people's rights. The poet wrote about everything he saw, but he was most famous for his poems speaking out against the terrible working conditions for coal miner's in Chile. This story follows Pablo from childhood through his adult years. The book would be amazing to show the diverse origins, topics, purposes, and styles of poets in an English classroom. It could also be used to show the impact literature and art forms have on sociopolitical movements. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. I think it gave a good summary of who Pablo Neruda is, and it had really unique illustrations. I liked all of the words in the illustrations, it made me feel as if I was taking a look inside of Neruda's brain and seeing his creativity flow. I liked his story so much that it inspired me to learn more about the poet, and I think that the kids would feel the same. The illustrations drew me in automatically, and I imagine the same effect on students. ( )

I love that Pablo Neruda always wrote with a green pen. Such a small detail but a wonderful edition to the narrative and a simple explanation given of how he loved nature and honored it always. I like what I learned from the text but don't think it was as cohesive or had the rhythm and flow I would expect of someone writing about a great poet like Neruda. she did explain complex topics simply and easy to digest for younger audiences. The illustrations are what capture the book for me- I especially love the details of the Spanish written throughout the illustrations, integrated into different images. ( )

This book is written about the amazing poet Pablo Neruda. At first his father didn't agree to his hobby so he changed his name and rose to fame over his poetry about love, odd things, and current event. His passionate poetry made him very famous, and this book describes just that. ( )

This biography is about the life of Pablo Neruda. Pablo was from Chile and is internationally known as a famous poet. Pablo was also known as a politician who fought for workers rights and stood up for the rights of his people. I didn't know that Pablo had to run away from soldiers who were looking for him after writing poems that made leaders angry. I also didn't know about Pablo's subject matter of his early poems. He wrote about so many things that he loved such as his artist friends, his observations of nature, and his love of colors and changing season. I really loved the way this book was organized. Most of the written text is short, sweet, and to the point. The illustrations show words embedded in almost everything. Especially the things that Pablo specifically loved. This was great representation of how Pablo saw words in everything. The beauty he saw in the life around him was filled by words that he would use to express his deepest feelings. This use of illustrations was effective in emphasizing just how much Pablo thought like an artist, always contemplating his voice and craft. This book was very enjoyable and has inspired me to be more familiar with Pablo Neruda's poems and messages. ( )
