Did anyone notice the weird "cloud" on page 27?

I liked this book for two reasons. First, the illustrations enhanced the story and were appropriate to the mood of the story. In the story, it said that the main character, Herman, helped his enemies. His enemies, who are sharks, said, “’Help! It’s after us!’” As the reader, I wondered what sharks could possibly be so scared of. Then, when I looked at the next page, I saw a large, bright, illustration that answered my question. There is an illustration of a sea monster that has large spikes along its back, a fiery mane, red eyes, and numerous sharp teeth. This bold illustration helped me see what scared the sharks. The illustrations were also appropriate to the mood of the story. The mood was upbeat which was supported by all of the illustrations being bright and colorful. Second, the plot was organized. Each page discussed a new character that Herman helped. This made the story easy to follow and engaging to the readers. The message of the story is the importance of helping others. Herman helped many different characters throughout the book. It did not matter if they were enemies or strangers, he was happy to help. By helping others, he made all of the characters very joyful. Herman is a young green octopus who likes to help. He helps everyone – his mother, his father, his friends, his enemies. And at the end of the day, when Herman goes home for dinner he can also help himself to dinner.

Although this charming book lacks any sort of conflict, it’s a great book for babies and toddlers who are learning how to be helpers. The text is very short and aided by comments from Herman and his friends in smaller fonts. The illustrations are imaginative and colorful and will appeal to kids. I especially like the illustration of Herman helping his uncle build a ship in a bottle.
