Jesus Christ is an out-of-work bum. A tired and hungry man can knock down a church built in stones. Only an author like Langston Hughes can use such creativity and symbolism to convey a strong message about racism during the time period following the Great Depression and prior to the Civil Rights Movement. On the Road shows the journey of a black Reverend and his delusions that allow the readers to see the strong presence of discrimination towards the minority. The story begins with the narrator indicating the Reverend’s lack of interest in snow and that he did not seem to notice that it was snowing. Snow is usually a symbolic representation of purity and in this case white people; thus, readers are being reminded of snow and how the Reverend ceases to notice its existence. Thus, he gives off an impression of a very naïve man who fails to realize that whether he likes it or not, there is plenty of snow around and by the same token white people are much more dominant than the blacks. One of the very ironic things is when the church fell down, it is covered in snow. This leads to my interpretation of white people bringing down their own structural society even though the blacks are always the one to blame for society’s misfortunes. In addition, it happens to be a black man’s doings. Perhaps this foreshadows a day in which a black person will attempt to break down society’s way of thinking and perhaps be successful (this goes back to the reason why the story is set right before the world wide political movement). Another incident I find quite humorous and amusing is when Christ comes to life and converses with the Reverend about his wishes to travel to Kansas City – a prominent city that promises to give work to anyone. Christ serves as a representation of independence and the free will to break out of a bubble that separates two different races rather than bring them unity. Instead of being satisfied as a crucified figure in a white Church, he made it clear to the Reverend that he is relieved to finally be release from an establishment of social barriers. This tie back to the message that Christ pushes and supports the ideal in which everyone is created equal. Although these few symbols presented connects to Hughes’ indication of racism and its strong impact on humanity; story essentially brings hope to people and that there is a potential in which equality can be achieved.
