There may be no more fascinating historical period than the late fourteenth century in Europe. The Hundred Years' War ravaged the continent, yet gallantry, chivalry, and literary brilliance flourished in the courts of England and elsewhere. Chaucer wrote brilliant satire, lords and ladies invented courtly rituals of love and romance, yet the vast bulk of Europe's population struggled with plague, economic uncertainty, and violence. John of Gaunt was the richest man in Europe, apart from its monarchs, and he epitomized and surpassed the ideals of the late Middle Ages. He created lavish courts, sponsoring Chaucer and proto-Protestant religious thinkers, and he survived the dramatic Peasants' Revolt, during which his sumptuous London residence was burned to the ground. As the head of the Lancastrian Branch of the Plantagenet family, he was the unknowing father of the War of the Roses, for his son Henry Bolingbroke usurped the crown from Gaunt's nephew, Richard II, after Gaunt had died. He passed away just as one great era gave way to the next: His grandson Henry the Navigator launched the Age of Exploration. Gaunt's adventures represent the culture and mores of the Middle Ages as few others' do, and his death is portrayed by Cantor as the end of that fascinating period. Shakespeare put into Gaunt's mouth the most patriotic speech in the English language: "this sceptre'd isle ... This other Eden, demi-paradise." Yet Shakespeare's version of Gaunt is an old and doddering man whose son took center stage. This book is very strange. It ostensibly uses John of Gaunt's life as a lens through which to view the way the aristocracy lived in the late Middle Ages. Unfortunately, it has very little in the way of organization. The book reads as though it was assembled by a clumsy editor from notes that Cantor left on his desk when he died. The result is a mishmash of facts about John of Gaunt and his century presented in nearly random order. Very disappointing from a scholar and writer of Cantor's stature. ( )

It seemed like the editor of this book didn't do a very good job. I did really like the style of writing, it was very accessible and read more like a story than a history book. ( )

This book was one of the few that was so painful to read that I had to put it down. The writing style was irritating in a way that I cannot describe, however I can confirm that I simply hated this book. ( )

Cantor uses the lfe of John of Gaunt as an excuse to introduce the reader to the Middle Ages. Like many of Cantor's books, The Last Knight is written in a light, readable style that won't make too many demands on an interested reader, but may tax the patience of someone looking for action. This book would make a great non-academic introduction into medieval history. ( )
