Excerpt from Children of the Wolf All the same, it seemed a pity that the twins had decided to mark out the boundaries of the new camp with all the elaborate ritual that went to the founding of a city. If the place happened to be unlucky the knowledge that it had been consecrated would lead to endless delay before the newcomers cut their losses and abandoned it. As he stood among the throng on the hilltop, waiting for the ploughing to begin, Marcus ventured to grumble about this to the man standing beside him. The story of the founding of Rome down to the choosing of Numa as the second king, told successively by a Latin, a Sabine, an Etruscan, and a Greek. It kept fairly close to the legendary account but I didn't find it very engaging ( )

this not so much a novel as a collection of episodic short stories relating, mostly, to Livy and Vergil's description of the early years of the Roman city-state. They are often humourous. It reads, as with all Duggan, quite well. ( )

Wow!

I don't know what the historians, ancient (eg Livy) or modern, tell us about the founding of Rome. I can't tell how well this retelling fits with the myths or the facts.

But the way Duggan manages to bring the story alive, the times, the customs, the warfare, the mindsets, is just amazing. Including his down to earth explanations of mythical elements.

And I really appreciate having discovered, through this book, parallels between Romulus and a certain other "historic" figure.

Highly recommended! ( )

It was just the place for a stronghold, a steep flat-topped hill on the eastern side of the river which marked the boundary of the Etruscans.
