Not quite on the level of Appointment in Samarra (which is amazing) but it has O'Hara's Fitzgerald-like style to it. The story just wasn't quite interesting enough for me. ( ) Sort of an unexpected Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett-ish feel to it, which is a good thing. I never quite knew where it was going, but it was told in such a way that i wanted to find out. I really liked that Malloy was a bigger-than-life sort of guy, which should have made him annoying to the core, but oddly, i could not dislike him even though i felt i should. Clever writing in my opinion. A little sentimental, but with an unexpected startling event nearer the end all make for a solid 4 stars. Many more O'Hara to go! sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Hope of Heaven, first published in 1938, is a fast-paced novel by John O'Hara in the "doomed romance" genre. The novel centers on a world-weary Hollywood screenwriter of only limited success in his mid-thirties who is in love with an idealistic young woman in her twenties who is only mildly interested in him. When her father, a private detective, comes to Los Angeles on a case in which the screenwriter has a part, tragedy ensues. John O'Hara (1905-1970) was the author of many novels and short stories and is best known for his first two novels - Appointment in Samarra and Butterfield 8.
