On becoming the seventh Earl of Adversane, Guy inherits disordered finances and finds himself guardian of an even more disorderly ward, Sophie. He bestows the 19-year-old on his sister, Beth, to be educated in the social graces. And Sophie, eager to transform herself, emerges as a spirited beauty, attracting the attentions of a French comte, an Italian musician, and a dashing 10th Hussar. Guy resents these gentlemen but cannot determine whether he is influenced by dutiful concern or simple jealousy.
