Like many churchgoers, C. Joseph Sprague finds himself in a quandary: he loves the church but often finds himself at odds with its principles and/or practices. An aptly named book. Bishop Spague's candid book is an embarrassment to The United Methodist Church, the episcopacy of The United Methodist Church, and to the church throughout the world. He denies the foundational beliefs of Christianity in favor of dissenting (and often heretical) views. The only merits of this book are, Sprague was honest in his writing and produced much discussion by publishing this work. ( )

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s insightful sermon based on Jesus' instruction to the Twelve in Matthew 10:16 -- "See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolved; so be wise as serpents [tough-minded] and innocent as doves [tender-hearted]" -- put my faith journey and vocational calling into perspective when I first read it in King's book Strength to Love while a seminarian in the early 1960s.
