Kelly Mills Johnson becomes restless in her thirty-ninth year. An appetite for more forces her to take stock of her middling middle-American existence and her neighbours' seemingly perfect lives. Her marriage to a successful attorney has settled into a comfortable routine, and being the mother of two adorable sons has been rewarding. But Kelly's own passions lie wasted. She eyes with envy the lives of her two best friends, Kathryn and Charlotte, both beautiful, successful businesswomen who seem to have it all. Kelly takes charge of her life, devising a midlife makeover plan. From page one, Kelly's witty reflections, self-deprecating humour, and clever tactics in executing that plan -- she places Post-it notes all over her house and car -- will have readers laughing out loud. The next instant, however, they might rant right along with Kelly as her commitment to a sullen, anorexic teenager left on her doorstep tries her patience or as she deflects the boozy advances of a divorced neighbour. Readers will need to keep the tissue box handy, too, as Kelly repairs the damage she inflicted on a high school friend; realises how deeply her husband, Patrick, understands and loves her; and ultimately grows into a woman empowered by her own blend of home and career. This book will appeal to readers of chick lit and other women's fiction titles who are ready to transition into something new in their own life.… (más)

I enjoyed the book about Kelly's transformation from a depressed, stay-at-home mother to a mompreneur with a thriving home staging business.

My only concerns were the unrealistic pace of Kelly's business success and the overpowering subplots which, at times, made Kelly seem more like an observant narrator rather than the star of the show.

I found this book through the author's phenomenal marketing savvy. I expected a break-out bestseller but found a quiet tale instead. ( )

Not my cup of tea. My impression was: entitled middle class suburban anxiety with very little perspective beyond that. It was well written and had good humor. I'm sure it's someone's kind of thing.

In the author's note Rouda says she wants to empower women-- especially in business and that is exactly what this book does! The main character, Kelly, takes control of her life in this inspirational and motivating novel. I'll have to remember to come back to this one when I hit my mid life crisis. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. There is a clear main character in Kelly Mills Johnson who has become restless in her thirty-ninth year while her two sons are at summer camp. She’s quirky with her post-it notes all over her house and her car on things she needs to change in her life. She also has a knack for interior decorating and “staging” a home. Her friend Charlotte (real estate agent) asks her to stage a house for her to sell, which causes Kelly to realize she has a talent. She becomes a whirlwind as she works to start her own business. On top of all that her college roommate Kathryn’s marriage is falling apart and dumps her anorexic daughter on Kelly and her husband Patrick who end up really liking having a teenage girl in the house.

This is a pretty fast paced book that will pull you into the lives of these friends as they entertain you. I read JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy before this book and this was a breath of fresh air. I love JK Rowling but her book had WAY too many main characters to follow. This is a nice, light and easy read. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story.

Love this book. It was a book that was easy to relate too. It made you want to keep reading. It kept me awake while I would read in bed. ( )
