A nice collection of photos of illuminated and other antique Bibles drawing from the collections of the Bodleian. From early papyrus documents to Bibles written in Native American translations, we get a good sampling over time of how the Bible has been written, put into books, scrolls, so on, and translated over time. Many of these were not just sacred books; they were works of art. Book includes good introductions to each section. Pretty good photography. ( ) NCLA Review: The Bible—the venerated book that is foundational for church libraries, the basis of congregational worship, and the inspiration for individual spiritual growth—has a long and interesting history. Christopher de Hamel tells this story using 60 magnificent full-color photos from the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, home of one of the world's finest collections of Biblical manuscripts. Here you will find superb photos of ancient Hebrew texts, the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament), beautifully decorated Bibles, the Gutenberg Bible, Luther's Bible, the King James Bible of 1611 and many more. Those of us who read the Bible in English will be surprised to learn that the first English translation of the Bible was declared illegal in England of all places. Why? Because at this time, the early 1400s, the upper classes spoke French, the educated people and the Church used Latin, and only the peasants spoke English. To pretend that an English Bible was sacred was thought to be disrespectful to God. This would be a wonderful gift book for those who take the Bible seriously and would like to know more about how it came to us. Libraries with large collections will want this book.
