This series is gold. It's hard sci-fi and yet surprisingly poignant and emotional at times - Aguirre handles that balance so beautifully. She takes you places you had no idea you were going. This is book 5 of 6 and is aptly named. You can see all the storylines of the previous 4 books being dealt with and handled. Sirantha goes to trial for treason for her actions with the Grimspace beacons and she's determined to right her wrongs. We get big, meaty backstory on March and Vel and I appreciated having them more fleshed out. The ending honestly broke my heart, like in itty, bitty pieces. I'm still picking them up off the floor. I honestly don't know what Aguirre is setting up for the last book but I know I've got to read it! ( )

This is one of those rare book series that improves with time, and I'm constantly amazed at how Aguirre keeps finding new ways to turn the tables and move Jax's evolution as a character in unexpected directions. There is a lot of... authorial courage (for want of a better word) in her choices and I respect her greatly for this.

The story-line remains interesting throughout and the characters are well-defined: unlike the previous ones, this book closes not with a cliffhanger but with what looks like an open end that could very well have been the conclusion of the narrative arc. Yet there is one more in the series, and I'm quite curious to see how Aguirre will tie up the remaining threads.

It must have been love, but it's over now....

I wanted to punch Jax in the face during this novel, repeatedly. This series was so damn good when it started. Now i see it should have ended a long time ago. One thing I have to ask is this; why does Jax, a jumper, a rebel, a fighter, and over all such a badass constantly find problems when it comes to something so simple as her relationship with March? Seriously, just why even bother? It's not like the sex is any good.

And him? This woman repeatedly fucks him over and he just surrenders his bleeding heart because....she's so speshul. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

This was a band of misfits, not a band any longer(dick move Aguirre BTW) that carried themselves trough some hard times with a general idea of a moral code. I mean, apart from March, people were really looking after their own interests. And that is why the series was brilliant. All of this random sacrifices out of the blue, or should i say black, are completely out of character and unbelievable.

The series should have ended a book ago. :/ ( )

Aftermath is book five in the Sirantha Jax series by Ann Aguirre.

Aftermath starts immediately after events in Killbox. Jax is in Grimspace trying to come back after changing the beacon signals, therefore altering space travel in general. Jax achieved her purpose, she has saved thousands lives, the Morgut ships are lost in Grimspace, but with the Morgut ships three of the Conglomerate ships are lost too and with them six hundred soldiers.
Now Jax is back and needs to confront the consequences of her actions, she has acted alone and even though she has saved many lives and worlds from extinction, public demonstrators want her to pay for the lives of the soldiers lost in Grimspace, lives that weight heavily on her conscience.

While Jax is in trial, March cannot sit idle not knowing how long it will take to get a final verdict and decides to leave to Nicu Tertius in search for his lost nephew, leaving Jax a little bit desolated because of his decision. But Jax is never alone, her friend and trustworthy companion Vel is with her in every step of the way.

In detention Jax has a lot of time to think; she is willing to face the consequences of her actions even if she has to pay with her life. She might have done things different, but she knows what she did was the only option/solution for the Morgut problem.
Jax also has three promises to keep, the first is to continue Doc’s research about the burnout in jumpers, the second is to return baby Z to Marakeq and the third is the one made to Loras whence to his people. If she is acquitted of her charges, before doing anything else she will have to teach the jumpers how to navigate using the new beacons signals, and just that is something that will take her months to accomplish.

This is one of those reviews in which I just want to say this book was amazing, one of the best in the series and one you “have” to read. But that won’t make justice to the masterpiece that is Aftermath.

Too bad I survived it. Dead women get monuments; live ones get trials.

Jax is one of my favorite heroines, she is far from perfect but everyday she tries to be the best she can be, not for her but for others, she is selfless to a level that she was willing to give her life to save others. Even though she may be perceived as a rebel she is an honorable person. She wasn’t always like this; she was selfish and immature and lived a life in which she was the center of the universe, but time, experiences and friends has made her the woman she is now days. And we have seen her transformation through the pages of this series.

“You’re clumsy. But it can’t be helped. You are who you are.”

March is March, in his own way he loves Jax very much but time has show that sometimes love is not enough, there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration, factors that are lacking in their relationship and even though they really want to be together sometimes things are not possible.

Sometimes, love isn’t enough, even when it’s all you have.

Ok, if you know me or have read my previous review of this series you will know I’m Team Vel all the way. Vel is one of those characters that slowly grows on you and when you less expected he has grabbed you and you won’t want to give him up. You will love him although he is from another planet, race, culture and may look like a giant bug. Vel is such a perfect character that you will forget he has a hard chitin, a side-set eyes and claws instead of hands. His physical form is not important because his hearts are what make him who he is. And is just appropriate that he has more than one, because of his capacity to love.

In Aftermath we also see Dina and Hit, their relationship has evolved too, they are a stable couple with a future ahead of them.
We also see other characters from previous books and met new ones. All of them interesting, complex and compelling.

Mrs. Aguirre is a master storyteller with the gift of words; there were some amazing parts, so beautifully written that I had to read them over and over again before continuing with my read. Page after page Mrs. Aguirre will transport you to another place, to the magic world she has created in the Sirantha Jax series. A place you would really like to visit, with characters you would really like to meet. In Aftermath she takes us through unexpected paths and as always she leaves us wanting for more.

I couldn’t put this book down once since the moment I started it to the moment I finished it. I ended up going to bed almost at four in the morning and in bed I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so much I had to get up to get my cell phone and started taking notes of what I wanted to tell you in this review.

Aftermath is not a walk in the park read, it’s a heart wrenching one. And I can say Mrs. Aguirre has done it again, she blew my mind completely with Aftermath.

The Sirantha Jax series is one of the most (if not the most) solid series I have read and it’s the only one in which I have gave all of its books a 5 Paws rating. And a five Paws rating is not enough for Aftermath, it deserves at least a purr with the paws.
The next and last installment of this series Endgame will be out next year; I’m very sad to see this series come to its end, so I will be waiting with mixed feelings for its release date.

I cannot recommend enough Aftermath and this series in general. Aftermath is not a stand-alone book, it should be read as a part of this magnificent series. If you haven’t read this book or this series I really don’t know what you are waiting for. Believe me, you NEED to read them now. ( )

The end wasn't as much of a cliffhanger as [b:Killbox|10035224|Killbox (Sirantha Jax, #4)|Ann Aguirre|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1293430612s/10035224.jpg|6913748] was, and for this I thank you most sincerely. I still can't wait for [b:Endgame|7653682|Endgame (Sirantha Jax, #6)|Ann Aguirre|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nocover-60x80.jpg|10219941], but this time it's more of a rest period, when I contemplate how far Sirantha Jax has come and what the future might hold for her. The complex beauty of her relationships with Hit, Dina, March and especially Vel is what really keeps me reading, and I am very curious to see how it all ends in the final book.

I highly recommend this series.
