An excellent informative work on theological trends in the mid to late twentieth century, its breadth of coverage is astounding. My only criticism is that it does not engage these trends and thinkers in anything but a positive way. Also because of the anthology nature of the book, there is little to no cross-debate between the various strands of theological thinking. The book does show that theology faces the same trendy thinking as other disciplines, as so many of the authors described in the book have been lost to the mists of time, for good or for ill. A welcome introduction to theologies that guide who we have become as a church today. ( )

Edited by David F. Ford, The Modern Theologians (1997) assembled many theologians to present an introduction to Christian Theology in the 20th century. After Ford’s formative essay on theology before the 20th century, in the next 35 chapters, scholars presented individual theologians (Barth, Rahner, et al.) in different geographical regions and theological movements that span the globe (from North America to Asia). Also represented were theologians and movements that represented theology in religious diversity and in other disciplines. Ford finished the book with questions concerning the future of theology. The book included a timeline, glossary, and index as well as notes and bibliography for every chapter. This excellent book has few peers in the area of contemporary theology. All students and practitioners of theology should utilize this book. ( )

An excellent general introduction to modern academic theology. Notable for its breadth of coverage. So much more than an undergraduate textbook. ( )
