Nella Larsen was an important writer associated with the Harlem Renaissance. While she was not prolific her work was powerful and critically acclaimed. Collected here are all three of her published short stories; "Freedom," "The Wrong Man," and "Sanctuary." These stories are about love, loss, mistaken identity, and death. It’s a shame she stopped writing in the 1930’s, after false accusations of plagiarism, because like her novels these stories are three little gems. Two are about former lovers’ foolish acts of despair, of which the first bears an echo of her novel Passing.
The third story, “Sanctuary”, deals with the ultimate loyalty to one’s community and contains in all its shortness an unforgettable plot twist.
