TO Show that continuity, it has been necessary to analyze the plastic forms of the principal painters from the dawn Of the Italian Renaissance down to the present day. His torical data are treated as merely incidental: no attempt has been made to present a complete summary Of the history of painting, although no important movement and no really first-class artist has been entirely left out of account in the general evaluations.
