With her children evacuated and her husband at the front, Tory Pace is grudgingly sharing the family home with her irascible mother, working at the local gelatin factory-to help the war effort, and generally doing just about as well as could be expected in difficult times. I think the blurb on this book is a little misleading. Yes, it is a book about a woman who is asked by her prisoner of war husband to write him explicit letters, but this is only a small part of the book. This is essentially a book about dealing with life, and follows Tory Pace, her husband Donald, and their children throughout the war and in the years beyond.
However, this is no run of the mill family story. This is a very quirky read, almost odd at times. The author has a turn of phrase that amused me many times, and he obviously enjoys writing about matters of mild disgust. The characterisations in the book are very well done, with a cast of unusual characters, who are described so well by the author, and my interest in them, and the story, was retained all the way through.
I think this book is well worth a read, but wouldn't be to everybody's tastes. I certainly enjoyed it, and found it to be quite clever at times. ( )
