Fantasy. Fiction. Historical Fiction. HTML:

My name is Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, and my age is three hundred and eighty-four years. Each new settlement asks for a new journal, and so this Book of Shadows begins...
In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate at the hands of the panicked mob: the Warlock Gideon Masters, and his Book of Shadows. Secluded at his cottage in the woods, Gideon instructs Bess in the Craft, awakening formidable powers she didn't know she had and making her immortal. She couldn't have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life.
In present-day England, Elizabeth has built a quiet life for herself, tending her garden and selling herbs and oils at the local farmers' market. But her solitude abruptly ends when a teenage girl called Tegan starts hanging around. Against her better judgment, Elizabeth begins teaching Tegan the ways of the Hedge Witch, in the process awakening memoriesâ??and demonsâ??long thought forgotten.
Part historical romance, part modern fantasy, Paula Brackston's New York Times bestseller, The Witch's Daughter, is a fresh, compelling take on the magical, yet dangerous world of Witches. Readers will long remember the fiercely independent heroine who survives plagues, wars, and the heartbreak that comes with immortality to remain true to herself, and protect the protégé she comes to

The whole "creation" tale was done a bit different than I'm used it (though I've not read that much in the way of witch or wiccan story lines). Instead of being just born into the skill, its more of a learned skill and gift from another.

My favorite portions were those from Bess's past. Those flowed better for me, and the characters were more interesting. Even the stalker aspect that usually is a turn off for me in other books wasn't so off putting in this. But when those retellings ended and it rejoined the journal entries, it was more disjointed there, and had to readjust to the tone of the narration.

Its not a bad read, but I just wasn't enthralled with it. I didn't want to read because I wanted to know what happened next, but more so for finishing on the library deadline. I really enjoyed reading The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane a heck of alot more ( )

Overall, it was a satisfying read. I loved the mix of historical fiction and fantasy. 3.8 Stars
It started out slow and a little confusing, but it picked up soon enough. I felt intrigued by Bess's story. My heart ached for her. Tegan is a complicated character, and I enjoyed her growth. Bess and Tegan's relationship is incredibly touching. ( )

This historical fantasy novel based on a fictional character Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, was both interesting and exceptionally slow moving. After Elizabeth's mother is hanged for being a witch, she finds herself with similiar powers, while at the mercy of another named Gideon for training. Bess flees after discovering Gideon's true nature and many years later befriends a young teenager who she suspects might have magical powers. Throughout all this Gideon pursues Bess, putting everyone she comes in contact with at risk.

The novel is well written but overly detailed, which slows the pacing of the story. Still, I overall liked the book and thought the audio narration was well done. ( )
