He's more at ease among the lowlifes, but his new client, a beautiful, wealthy woman, a real femme fatale, moves in the upper crust of society. Grey's hot on the trail of a killer, despite obstructive cops who don't want a private dick sniffing around and digging up secrets. BOOK REVIEW:
Combine the sharp edged, hard nosed, wise cracking of the classic private eyes, the elegance of noir film, and the perspective of a gay protagonist ~ sound good? Then grab this book, and enjoy the ride, because Ford brings all these threads together into a great story ~ the first in a series I'm heartily looking forward to.
Grey makes for an excellent narrator and main character, not just the archetypal good man doing a dirty job, but also a well rounded character, with a past, friends, and an inconvenient crush that he's hoping might turn into something more. This is primarily a detective story, more than a romance, but as with so many of my favourite crime books, the detective's personal life is integral to how they go about solving the case.
Grey's personal life extends well beyond his client and his suspects, as well ~ his friends, contacts and police station enemies form a well-drawn cast that helps the Vegas of the 1940's come to life. The use of period language isn't always perfectly seamless, but I appreciated the author's choice to use it, and thus confront, some of the less pleasant social realities of the period ~ attitudes about race and gender and sexuality that are integral to both plot and character.
"Lily White Rose Red" is both a real page-turner, and a stylish piece of story telling ~ a real pleasure to read.
