This book recounts the legend of Betsy Dowdy, a North Carolina teenager who played an important part in the victory over the British during the Revolutionary War. Author’s Note. Summary: A girl Betsy wants to save her family when she finds out the redcoats are coming. She lets her father know but he tells her there is no one who is able to get to the General fast enough because he lives deep through the woods. So she gets on her horse and rides nonstop through the night into the morning until she got to the General. She shows great courage and finally after a long night, gets there in time and saves her town. Personal Reaction: This was a nice book to read because it shows the girls courage and proves that children are always looking out for those around them whom they love. Though this story is not modern day, children will do a lot for their families, and this story reminds us of that. Classroom Extension: 1. When talking about the wars of the past, this book could be used and the children could write about a time they felt they helped their family. 2. The children could draw a picture of what they think the town would've looked like if the girl had not gotten there in time. 3. The children could have discussion time about the book and explain if they think she did the right thing, and what they would have done. Summary: A young woman shows courage by warning the general of an attack. Personal Reaction: I thought the young woman was very brave. She and her horse ran the way to warn the general. The book was very detailed and colorful. Classroom extensions: -The students could draw scenic pictures. -They could draw a picture of a horse. -They could learn about the military or war. During the midst of an emergency a young girl Betsy Dowdy rose to the occasion. After hearing that the British were coming to take her horses and farm she took her best horse and made a long journey to reach somebody who could help. Because of her courage and bravery she was able to make a successful trip which lead to an event that would change the war. This book was very interesting to me because for whatever reason I did not know this complete story. The illustrations were very pretty and unique. I think the author did a good job of balance fact and entertainment. You were able to learn something but it was enjoyable to read. You could have the student make up their own terrible journey that Betsy might have to endure on the way back home to her family. You could also fit this into a lesson plan about the war. This would fit into a lesson plan about bravery and courage; being able to stand up for what is right and what you believe in. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
