Gorgeous illustrations and informative, lovely poetry. A good book for those who like to explore the forest! ( )

This book is a little bit more complex, it would be good for 2nd and 3rd grade readers who may be just getting into poetry. It has a lot of good figuartive language which can be a good thing for kiddos to get used to. It also features likeable characters and is themed about what happens at night. ( )

At first glance, I assumed this book would be purely poems - I was incorrect. This book not only is comprised of poems about creatures, but there are sections on each page that go into further detail and descriptions of the animals. These poems are able to allow students to engage with the habits of an animal and than further explore with the section that further describes the animal. This book is informative and engaging, as it is not only a comprehendible book there are captivating photos to keep the readers attention. ( )

This collection of poems was a 2011 Newberry honor book. I really enjoyed the illustrations that accompanied each poem, as I feel like they did a great job of bringing the poem to life for a young reader.

The marvelous illustrations are also combined with interesting and engaging facts about the forest and forest life for the reader. I feel like the combination of well written poetry, along with the great illustrations and facts form a powerful combination that the reader will love and enjoy. It has the potential to not only spark their love of poetry, but also inspire their wonder and aww of the forest and the creatures that call the forest home.

Welcome to the Night

To all of you who crawl and creep,
who buzz and chirp and hoot and peep,
who wake at dusk and throw off sleep:
Welcome to the night.

To you who make the forest sing,
who dip and dodge on silent wing,
who flutter, hover, clasp, and cling:
Welcome to the night!

Come feel the cool and shadowed breeze,
come smell your way among the trees,
come touch rough bark and leathered leaves:
Welcome to the night.

The night’s a sea of dappled dark,
the night’s a feast of sound and spark,
the night’s a wild, enchanted park,
Welcome to the night!
Moon’s Lament

Where are the bright dips of fireflies?
Where are the zigzags of moths?
Where are the diving sweeps of the nighthawk
and where its haunting cry?
Where is the thrum of crickets,
the throbbing of frogs?
Where are the great flocks of travelers
whose soft wings whispered to me,
wave upon wave,
beating toward some distant wood?
Where are the stars?
Where are the pale scarves of clouds?
Where are my ghostly shadows,
my pools of molten silver,
poured with such extravagance?
Where has it all gone—
my glory,
my radiance,
now that day has come?
