Whenever I return to the Dredd strips after a while it takes a moment to readjust to just how cruel the humour is, but I love it for that. Judge Dredd is the ultimate antihero; not because he is unlikely but because he's an icon of fascism – and the joke is on those who don't get that.
Dredd does the epic storylines well but for me it's always at its purest in these shorter, often more high-concept strips: Judge Dredd vs the Blob! Judge Dredd takes a bad trip! Judge Dredd as a blues song!
It's police procedural as twisted social satire. Donald Trump would love him. (
