trip is home to Korea, where traditional cooking, etc., are done. Really nice!! ( )

I like this book for a read aloud for a second or third grade class. It would have to be a read aloud because it has some Korean words mixed throughout. One thing I would do with this book is have the students compare the Korean culture to out culture here. I would have them find some similarities and differences between the two and draw a picture of something they do with their family like the family in the book. I would also use this to talk about sequence of events since each page talks about something else they did on the trip. Since there is a clear beginning and end to the trip I would have them talk about how it began, one thing that happened in the middle, and how it ended.

In this book, Wong invites us to join her on one of her childhood journeys back to her mother's home in Korea. We follow Wong as she experiences feeding scraps to the pigs, sewing clothes for winter, and playing card games with her family. As it gives readers a glimpse into a way of life most American children today would not be familiar with, The Trip Back Home would be a wonderful story to read to a pk-3 class learning about cultural diversity or the traditions of different world cultures. For this very same reason, however, I think that this book would be a great way of introducing young tech-obsessed 21st century kids to new understandings of the words "leisure" and "hard work." ( )
