This one is actually surprisingly multi-faceted for Sweet Valley High. Not just the (usual) existence of a subplot, which is about Jess feeling like her parents treat Liz as perfect and her as very much not (true), but the way that it deals with George & Robin's infidelity and ideas of whether you should try to keep someone once they've emotionally checked out. Sure, it does it in the framework of a melodramatic plane crash and subsequent disability, and the way that Liz breaks through Enid's mental block against getting better is very OTT, but beneath all that there's a better understanding of the complexity of human experience than you usually find in these.
