After Peabody inadvertently overhears two police officers discussing their illicit crimes, she immediately takes the case to her superior, Lieutenant Eve Dallas, and sets in motion an investigation that will rock the foundations of the NYSPD.

This is one of a handful of books in the In Death series in which the culprits are identified early on, and the main focus of the plot is collecting sufficient evidence to build a case against them. The police procedural elements are gripping as Eve and her team work to keep their investigation on the QT, but also confront the villains at every turn. This leads to some very intense and suspenseful moments.

While the crimes are not the most heinous presented in the series, the perpetrators are particularly disturbing given that there are few things worse than corrupt cops who are supposed to uphold the very laws that they walk all over.

There is also some very strong character development in this one both for Eve and Roarke, but especially for Peabody as she grows more confident as a detective. IAB Detective Don Webster is also front and center and it is fun to see his interactions with the primary case as well as a certain off planet chief of police.

Overall, a satisfying addition to the series. ( )

Another excellent episode in this long running series. This time a murder of a junkie leads to corruption in Eve's beloved police force. Lt. Renee Oberman is using Illegals as her own personal cash cow and murdering any cops who get in her way. Oberman and Eve couldn't be more different. She is undermining everything that Eve stands for and believes. Eve and her crew are determined to end the corruption and bring Oberman and her crew to justice. ( )

If I am to strictly rate the book, yes, it's a 5. Who doesn't love Eve Dallas, with her hard exterior, slightly softer interior, hot relationship with the even hotter Roarke, and somewhat tenuous friendships/working relationships with Peabody, etc? The story was good, as always, as Robb has these characters down pat. This one throws in some dirty cops, which of course riles Eve's righteous ways, and she gathers her forces to make the good guys, of course, prevail in the end. Unfortunately, I had the audio version of this particular book. I'm not sure of what the fine listeners on Audible partake, but they should share, because they rave about the narrator. Uh, no. It was terrible and distracting -- Peabody sounded like she had a mouthful of marbles, the Commander sounded like he was foreign and English is his second language, I could go on, but I don't want to think about it any longer. ( )

One of my favorite Eve Dallas stories, as it shows her at her most clever, righteous, and fearless. ( )
