Claire is in Scotland in 1968. The beginning of this second story teases and torments the reader. I had misgivings, where was Jamie? But I was enthralled, tearful, devastated in turns. Enjoyable isn't the right word for a tale which bewitched and leaves you bedraggled. I was going to take a break, but no. Onto Voyager! ( ![]() Finished yesterday for the nth time. Sandwich book. "Present day" builds up and then back to the time when Claire and Jamie are together, which builds up when they are parted, back to "Present day" only to find out that Jamie didn't die at the Battle of Culloden. Can't wait to read the next one. I started this series when it first came out because I kept hearing how great it was. And while I did enjoy the first novel I enjoyed it less and less with each subsequent book. Reading these books has become more habit than anything else. I really have not enjoyed the last few books and this one was no exception. I sort of feel obliged at this point to see the story to its conclusion so it would be nice if it would finally conclude. I'm really curious to see how the next book goes. This one took a while to get through -- as other reviewers noted, if your psyche is in anyway tender, this one is a bit hard on it. But all the things I loved about the first book were still there -- the romance, the history, the honesty of the characters.
