The Leeds Library is the oldest remaining proprietary subscription library in Britain. It was founded in 1768, and moved to its current purpose-built location in 1808. The library is funded by member's subscriptions, and rental of the shops that occupy the ground floor of the building. Membership is open to anyone over eighteen. The library has some 140000 books, with strong collections in topography, history, biography, and literature. It has a number of special collections including Civil War pamphlets and Reformation Tracts.
