Descripción:
Part of a family book business since 1974, Handy Book Exchange began on Yonge Street when Olive Navis bought the business after the founder passed away. The Avenue Road location was opened in the fall of 1982 by her son Al Navis. In 1992, came the biggest change, Al moved north to Thornhill to become the first Canadian bookseller to sell books on-line, two years before the World Wide Web even came into being. Olive moved the stock from Yonge Street to Avenue Road and continued to guide the reading habits of North Toronto until her death from emphyzema in November 2006. Her good friend Carole Nelles continued to operate the store as a tribute to Olive until Al closed up the internet business in August 2009, returning to the store he founded, 28 years earlier.

While the store has changed a bit since Al returned (adding more handcovers), it is still the only used bookstore in North Toronto remaining after the rest have either closed or moved away...continuing to guide the reading habits of North Toronto for yet another generation.

If you have books which you are longer needing, please bring them in and get a store credit. Please don't include encyclopedia volumes or sets of any kind, Reader's Digest condensed books, books in languages other than English or textbooks for any grade as they are unable to donate them.

That's the other great thing...the books that they cannot make use of get donated to any one of fifty destinations. The Salvation Army, Goodwill, Toronto's Food Bank, Sunnybrook Hospital, Baycrest Medical Centre, St. John's Convalescent Hospital, as well as any church, school or business that has books sales for charity. All get regular donations from Handy Book and over the years, more than 150,000 books have found their way to other readers to be enjoyed again.
