History & Location

The original Fort Garry Public Library first opened in September of 1956 in a 12' by 24' room in the municipal hall of the former Rural Municipality of Fort Garry. The current library on Pembina was built in 1960. Thanks to a bequest from the estate of Dr.A.W.Hogg, a sunken addition with a mezzanine as well as a children's area was added in 1967, increasing the branch's total area to 8,000 square feet. Fort Garry Library is located on the east side of Pembina Highway next to the District 6 Police Station. Fort Garry Library is considered an excellent example of Modernist architecture, characterized by its flat roof, cubic shape and open flowing floor plan.
Collections & Circulation

Fort Garry Library has a well developed collection of Adult, Young Adult and Children's books and magazines. Music cassettes and CD's, books on tape and CD, Express Bestsellers, large print books and Adult and Children's DVDs and videocassettes are also available at the branch. The reference collection includes newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets and government documents. Fort Garry Library circulates close to 270,000 items per year.
