The Auckland Free Public Library opened in 1880. Branch libraries opened from 1913 onward. The current central library building was opened in 1971.
The amalgamation of seven of the wider Auckland area city and district councils into one supercity in 2010 made Auckland Libraries the largest public library system in Australasia.

The Auckland Library Heritage Trust is a charitable trust that assists the Auckland Libraries with the preservation, care and development of their heritage collections.
