I nominate
Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol
The Manuscript Found in Saragossa by Jan Potocki
I'll also second Tender is the Night. I've read Heart of Darkness way too many times the last few years to go for that.

Scarper, thanks for booting this off.
I nominate The Portrait of a Lady and A Hero of our Times.
Also, I will second Dead Souls. Sounds interesting.

Apparently I'm too late to nominate or second The Manuscript found in Saragossa--but I'll add my support by "third"ing. :)
My nominations are:
The Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot
Three Trapped Tigers by G. Cabrera Infante

I'm back after a hiatus. I'll second Dead Souls and nominate again Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. If I'm not to late...

It looks like the winners are:
Conversation in the Cathedral (6 votes) and Heart of Darkness (5 votes).
I suggest we read Heart of Darkness first...simply because i have it!

Oh-boy I missed the voting by one day!
But... this marvelous group selected two books that I wish to read. Good job to all that nominated and voted!!
I have just finished Madame Bovary and will be posting my thoughts today. I like scarper(#14) - have Heart of Darkness and will have to order Conversation in the Cathedral. So I will place a vote for us to start with Conrad's book too.

Has the book after Heart of Darkness been chosen and if so, when does the discussion begin?
18christiguc
>17 alans: Yes, I think it is Conversation in the Cathedral (see message 14).
I don't know when we are due to start, but I have it on my shelf, just waiting for a word from the group so that I can start it! :)
