I have a dumb question. How can I turn my kindle 3 off? I know I should just let it sleep and that is what I do, but what if I wanted to turn it off? I am having trouble finding that in the guide.

Some quick googleing doesn;t pull anything up on the 3. For the 2 as well as my iPod Touch, you hold down the sleep button. Can you please try that to see if that does it?

edit: Another page after my posting says, again for the 2, hold the button down for 4 seconds and then release to get it to turn off.

I think if you want to turn it all the way off, you hold the switch to the right for a long time -- like 20 or 30 seconds. But I am not absolutely sure about this.

You're welcome. Hope you get it to turn back on... ;-)

Would love to know how long you held the button for in case this comes up again.

edit: Turning my ipod touch back on after a complete shut down is a pain as well. Takes a couple tries.

I would guess between 5- 10 seconds? The power light started blinking right away and then it turned off.

Turned right back on.

The power switch is at the bottom edge on the Kindle 3 (unsure on the 3g), the same one you turn it on with. Just slide it like you do to turn it on, this will turn it off. I turn mine off, as if I don't I'm likely to turn a page accidentally, I'm clumsy like that LOL! But it's not going to waste battery power, the only time your Kindle uses battery power is when it's actually drawing a page, so if you're not worried about losing your place then it's not necessary to turn it off.

just to add my own little bit...got my new kindle on xmas and I never fully switch off as so little power is used...anyway I love the thoughtful screensavers nicely chosen by Amazon...yes of course it's all a sales thing..but Amazon do it so easily and make life so easy. The first book I downloaded took seconds!! amazing :))

And just to clarify it further, according to the User's Guide, the estimated time required to hold the slider in order to turn off the Kindle is 7 seconds. I've had mine for about a month and I rarely turn it off, rather just letting it go to sleep on its own (which it will do after 10 minutes) or most often simply putting it to sleep myself with the quick flip of the slider. Oh, and holding the slider for 15 seconds will initiate a full reset, which you'd try if it froze or wouldn't turn on.
