Just a thread for whatever general discussion is wanted about Madame Bovary: who's reading, what edition, translation, etc.

I've got an old copy from my Mum - she's read Madame Bovary twice, and disliked it both times. She only read it the second time because it was on so many people's "must read" or "top ten" lists that she thought she must have missed something the first time. :)

It doesn't have any identification of note (apart from its $2 price tag, so that gives an indication of its age! when was the last time I bought a new book that was only $2!?), so I don't know who translated it, or edited it, or anything really!

ETA: Definitely no spoilers here please. If you want to discuss a particular plot point, can you do that in the thread for that part (or start a new thread, if you think it merits that).

Wow! I'm so excited to see this thread. I have this book at the top of my TBR list because my face-to-face book group is discussing it Sept. 2nd. My copy is also used for $2 -- a B&N Classic translated by Eleanor Marx Aveling. Mine has a time line and introduction with some comments and questions (no answers, though!) at the end.

I like the way you've set up the discussion threads, wookie. I plan to read it that last week in August in one fell swoop. It'll be great to be able to post my comments as I read and then go back and read other's comments later.

I'm a lapsed member of this group. I've missed it, but I've also read many of the latest selections: Buddenbrooks, 2666, Dr. Zhivago. It's still interesting to read the comments even when I don't read along with the group.

I'm here, vocal, but appallingly bad at actually reading any of the books we've chosen. :) I still have 2666, Buddenbrooks and Wives and Daughters unopened; and am halfway through Vanity Fair (and The Woman in White from a year ago).

I'm determined to turn over a new leaf with Emma Bovary! Once I finish my current read(s), I shall be opening it! And hopefully finishing it too.

ETA: I don't think anyone's ever been quite so excited about one of my threads before! :)

I read Madame Bovary years ago so I won't be participating this time. Like Donna828, I always enjoy reading the comments. Once you're all done, I recommend Philippe Doumenc's Contre-enquête sur la mort d'Emma Bovary,a thriller in which he postulates that Emma's demise is not what it seems.... it puts the novel in a whole different light!
