The color of water

The parallel accounts of James McBride and his mother's lives are haunting. His matches the cliche of 'growing up poor and black in New York city' just as poorly as hers does 'growing up the daughter of an orthodox Jewish rabbi'.

With the new books that I bought in the UK, the Theological sections should fill up nicely now, and I may have to hold myself back on the needlework books to leave them for next year.

(Right. I'm going to leave these lovelies around unread! Do you believe that? Maybe I ought to mention that I read Hardanger Embroideries this morning while entering it under the pretext of trying to find a date.)

I should probably point out that the author of The Good, the Bad and the Difference would probably find it strange that I have included it as theology - it is secular ethics, but I read it in a theological context, so have included it that way. Cohen can take comfort in the fact that I bought his book - in that same context.

More or less the same about Maternity Rolls. I am so glad that this book was offered to me in Early reviewers, as I probably would not have come across it otherwise. I can only introspect about my own invalidity issues in a theological context, therefore I think of hers in the same context.

My review: So much of our world (even in hospitals) is designed for healthy males. Not for anyone who doesn't fit. Heather Kuttai's intensly personal experience of this will resonate with anyone who has ever had to deal with the frustrations of not fitting the norm.

Most of the books I have read on disabilities/handicaps are either narrative OR theoretical. The great value of this book is in the way the narrative is combined with the theoretical. The informed introspection is combined with impressive writing talent. I think I am even more impressed with the courage it must have taken to not only write this as a thesis, but also to then publish it. In a society that treats invalids as invalid, affirming her own validity in this way must have been much harder than the rest of us can comprehend.

La Technique : The fundamental techniques of cooking was really a disappointment. I have much clearer directions for the few techniques here that I am interested in (Much of this book is fancy presentation) and the black and white pictures aren't a big help.

Today I finished reading Acts in Greek. Besides the three books listed above:
Acts for everyone part 1
Acts for everyone Part 2
Acts

I also used Acts : a handbook on the Greek text, but haven't counted that one - I did get a lot out of it, but much of it is above my head.
