Has anyone heard anything about a new magazine named "Ancient History Magazine". If no one has I might take the plunge on it when it begins. I would like to know if it might worth subscribing to or will it be a "popular" magazine tilted towards the lowest common denominator. If it isn't then can anyone suggest a mazine one might subscribe to.

Wow, no I've never heard of that one. I'm a frequent buyer of "Archaeology" and "Current World Archaeology" though... highly recommended :-D

I'd wait before subscribing. I've been burned before by subscribing to magazines whose first issues never see the light of day. Never got my money back either.
By the way, the reference to Indiana Jones doesn't bode well.

I would wait for the newstand copy. I also am a frequent buyer of "Archaeology" and "Current World Archaeology" like Feicht.

I think I'm going to be adding Archäologie in Deutschland to the list here pretty soon :-D
This one about the Batavians has me wetting myself:

As its name implies, Ancient Warfare covers only the violent bits of Ancient history. The current issue features a number of good articles about Belisarius.
A Dutch effort at a very favorable subscription price (40 EUR for 6 issues at 60 pages worldwide), I recommend it as an entertaining read that situates itself below specialist/academic titles but well above the usual hyperventilating titles directed towards the general public. It has plenty of Osprey style illustrations and nerdy discussions (such as on the length of Greek greaves). An Osprey-style magazine is probably a good description of its approach.
While creating the link, I saw on their website that the October issue will be available in many Borders outlets, so many of you can check it out or take a cheap test subscription as I did (I am not affiliated to the magazine in any way beside subscribing to it.).

I just picked up Ancient Warfare, and it's title does not lie. It seems to be well produced. Maybe I will get a gladius sionce I will not be able to get it on a plane:)
Seriously the magazine is not too bad, I just wonder how many issues can they publish before it gets repetitive.

Good point, but then again they only publish every other month, so I imagine they can go for a while ;-)

That I didn't know, I this is the first time it has crossed the magazine rack I frequent. I will get a subscription as well.

In my opinion Minerva Magazine places itself on a level between hardcore academia and semi-popular style:

Ancient Warfare Magazine seems geared more for the hobbiest who buys miniatures than the historian, but I could be wrong. I've never seen Minerva before -- it looks really good! Do any newstands in the US carry it

I know Ancient Warfare Mag has a big following in the reenactment community; it is pretty popular on the Roman Army Talk forums

Minerva looks interesting and I have subscribed to it since I never did subscribe to Ancient Warfare taking Garp's take on it.. Thanks for the information.
