Eeee! As an Iowa girl, I'm pleased to say that I'll be interviewing Jane Smiley for the September SOTT, about her new book Private Life. Submit questions here by September 1.

Who do you read? How old were you when you became a serious reader?

With whom do you correspond? Do you keep copies of your letters?

Susan Sontag had over 15,000 books. Is your library as impressive?

You taught at Iowa State University, did you enjoy your time there? I grew up in the same county. My son recently graduated from ISU.

I just wanted to comment that I really liked A Thousand Acres and the movie did not do your book justice.

What is a typical work day for you? Do you write in the morning or the evening? Do you write long hand or use a computer?

Who do you think has been overlooked for the Nobel Prize in literature? Who do you think is the best essayist today?

When you were writing "The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton," how much of the total time was spent in research vs. actually writing the book? Do you recall any particular aspect of the research that proved especially difficult? How does the research for that work compare with that for "Private Life"?

These are fantastic! Keep them coming! I'm actually going to send the questions on Monday morning EST, so please post more!

It seemed to escape most reader's of Ten Days in the Hills that people in Hollywood do in fact have mostly meaningless sex non stop and talk movies and their pet politics non stop and that you were perhaps chronicalling and commenting on the flip side of the American Dream: How truly empty having so much of what you think you want and think will make you happy can leave you so unfulfilled.

Were you surprised by the criticism levied against Ten Days in the Hills?

Of all the books you've written, which one was the most special experience for you while writing it and why?

You've probably sent questions and I've left it too late, but just in case:

I noticed you'd published a children's book? How did writing that compare with writing for adults?

I'm putting together the final list of questions now. Thanks for all the great questions!

How much time do you do on research? I've read your comments on The Greenlandersbut you write on such a wide variety of subjects, farmimg, real estate, breeding horses
The battles in Missouri over slavery, academic life(
Moo was hilarious!)
The age of Grief, Ordinary Love & Good will all made me cry -- I understand your background on an Iowas farm, but how do you fit in all these varied subjects?
