Just picked this up yesterday. Monmouth Court House: The Battle that Made the American Army by Joseph G. Bilby. Looks good. I need to go visit the battlefield, it's only about 45 minutes away.

You've probably been to Washington's Headquarters in Morristown, then. I grew up in Newark and Maplewood NJ (moved from one to the other at age 11) and went to the Morristown site as a kid, but never really appreciated it enough until I revisited as an adult. I will keep an eye out for the Bilby book. I read 1776 and Washington's Crossing back-to-back in 2008 and enjoyed them both. Washington's Crossing in particular deals quite a bit about the war in New Jersey and the important role that the local NJ militias, not even technically under Washington's command, played in the proceedings. Living out here in California, now, I'm not quite as conscious of the Revolution on a day-to-day basis as I was living in NJ and going to college in Boston.
