I've just started watching the Jeremy Brett 'Holmes' episodes after finding them on DVD. I haven't seen them since I was a teenager watching them with my grandmother.

They are SOOOO good, although some are a bit hard to believe. It's also great because I can share my love of Holmes with my husband who's a 'non-reader'.

i think these (particularly the earlier ones) are the best portrayals of Holmes and Watson ever, especially with Edward Hardwicke as the good Doctor.
it's too bad that the later ones were so bizarre and far from the canon, but i guess having to write around the broken health of your leading man was difficult.

I haven't gotten to the later ones yet - I'll have to see what I think of them. Normally I dislike when TV adaptations stray from the canon. But if I prepare myself in advance and tell myself it's just for fun, I might be able to enjoy watching anyway.

I've heard that Watson changes at some point - haven't gotten to that part either. That might bother me.

I like the earliest ones with the first Watson and I think that the one about the goose (the Blue Carbuncle) is the funniest but also like The Solitary Cyclist.

I've loved the Jeremy Brett Holmes for decades now and truly mourned his passing in 1995. I also used to watch the show with my father, who died a few years ago, so now watching it takes on extra meaning. I think my favorite one is The Empty House, of the Return of Sherlock Holmes. Watson's reaction to his friend coming back from supposed death was hilarious.

'The Blue Carbuncle' has become a mainstay of our holiday viewing. it just isn't Christmas without The Blue Carbuncle!

we usually make it a double feature with the old Ronald Howard episode 'The Christmas Pudding' (from the 50's).

I'm still working my way through them and I'm dreading the one where Watson changes...it's not going to be the same with a different Watson!

yeah, that's what i thought at first too.
David Burke was very good, but after having viewed them all multiple times i now think that Edward Hardwicke is the best Watson ever!

And the great thing is that if you have Netflix you can put them in your queue and watch them on your computer as you'd like!

I finally ordered the DVD set of Brett's Holmes series. I had some VHS from the 80s, complete with Vincent Price introductions, but the quality's pretty bad.

Though I used to think David Burke was THE Watson, on recent viewings I find myself warming up to Edward Hardwicke much more. I think he had better chemistry with Jeremy Brett.

I've been watching this series on Netflix on my iPad and love it! I saw all the episodes from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and have started The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett is a wonderful Holmes and I actually like Edward Hardwicke better as Watson than David Burke, so I was ok with the change. The best part of this series, in my opinion, is the Victorian setting, the authentic costuming, and the English landscape. Very well done. Watching these shows is interferring with my reading time, but it's worth it.

I agree w/ Enodia, as I think they are the wildest, most telling and clear Screen-adaptations ever!
