Welcome! I love your images for each category. (I'm surprised by the placement of Born to Kvetch, too, but that's what's in the front of my copy (I just checked); it may be that "West Germanic" is defined so as to exclude Yiddish.)

What did you think of Justinian's Flea? I've been eyeing that for a DF.

23GoofyOcean110
Abr 24, 2010, 2:37 pm

Thanks Lorax! Much appreciated.

Perhaps since Yiddish also has roots in Hebrew, which could arguably be said to have been formed in Asia, someone figured that it would fit into 'Oriental'. But maybe that's an imaginative stretch. Taking a second look, Japanese could be correctly classified as 'East Asia' rather than 'Oriental', though perhaps someone could enlighten me about the distinction.

Personally, I was actually disappointed with Justinian's Flea. The best part of it was the introduction or the first chapter or whatever. But it quickly got bogged down into Byzantium emperor successions with little to do about epidemics, diseases, rats, and fleas. The connections were fairly straightforward: Fleas and rats were abundant and epidemics were common and in some cases affected even emperors and therefore the course of events. I just felt it oversold the connection a bit and wound up going on a lot about several of the emperors that are generally skimmed over in common surveys of the time, leaving me on very unfamiliar and confusing ground. I found it difficult to keep a lot of the main figures straight in my head; many had very similar or the same names.

Hey bfertig! I like you images too, though the one for 800--I mean P kinda creeps me out.

25GoofyOcean110
Abr 24, 2010, 10:06 pm

Aw, I picked that one because I was looking for something that would get at both the language and the literature ideas. I was looking for something that had a bunch of text or fonts, and something that expressed a theme of literature - in this case romance or whatever. Actually, the text at the bottom just says something ot the effect of 'write a letter to reach out and touch someone' which I thought was a nice sentiment

Going through Kaeli's list, I saw that Cheaper by the Dozen was listed as a T. I had read that years ago as a kid, but had forgotten about it and hadn't ever added it to my library. I've fixed that and updated my list to include it.

Thanks for the heads up. I checked my list against the wiki page and there were three deviations including the one you found. My count is 225 total now. Which is still different than your tally. It looks like you've added a phantom category to C, and forgot to count one in K & N.

Lordy, these lettered categories are so much harder to keep straight than a decimal system is.

The LOC says Shucked is SH (which makes sense, if it's focusing more on oysters as aquaculture and the other one in TX on oysters as food) and the Great Typo Hunt is in E.

34GoofyOcean110
Editado: Jun 18, 2012, 10:51 am

Yes, Shucked was about a food journalist's year+ working on an oyster aquaculture farm in Duxbury, MA, whereas Sex, Dex, and Oysters was a food journalist's tour of eating a bunch of oysters in restaurants around the country and select places in Europe. thanks lorax!

guess neither of those are really 'new' classifications for me though.
