I don't have Sex and the Social Order and I don't remember ever reading it. Has anyone? I wonder how much of it would be considered useful in "improv(ing) relations between men and women" as it claims on the cover. This is the sort of book I used to devour in my teens and which would make me feel even more confused and bewildered. And I would have had to hide it too.
As for the cover - it is a lovely old Pelican - very reassuring. Something about those blue spines makes me feel like I could easily grasp all the amazing knowledge within them and be an educated member of society. Which is why I collect Pelicans, I suppose.

Current cover is from Penguin's late 50s dabbling with colour covers - it is designed by Abram Games (google him).

There's a mention on another thread about the Penguin Collectors Society; www.penguincollectorssociety.org
One of their publications is the Penguin Companion which is stuffed full of interesting information about Penguin matters generally including a reasonably full entry on Abram Games (see this week's cover).

Just checked The Penguin Companion on this and Penguin by Design on Games - these covers were intended to compete with other paperback covers but they were not promoted enough, people did not recognise them as Penguins, and they were very expensive - so Penguin dropped them. Baines' book has some lovely examples of Games covers and also of the American Penguins on which they were based.

ok, that's gone now but it's here

the new one is one i don't have, unlike the previous ones which were all mine. I do have Billy Liar with the Germano Facetti cover (see here http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j303/keirh/1962PenguinKeithWaterhouseBillyLiar... but this is the panic top version from the late 60s.
Anyone else can nominate a cover of a week if they can supply a decent size scan or pick one from my library, otherwise I'll be happy to keep selecting them.

This week's cover - Jennie by Paul Gallico is sweet - I have another cat book by the same author called Thomasina the cat who thought she was God which doesn't have such a cute cover - the titles on LibraryThing don't match the Penguin titles - Jennie is known as The abandoned and the Penguin title of the other is simply Thomasina. How irritating. I haven't read either.

Loving the 70s vibe of this week's cover the puffin book of photography - reminds me of the time when books cost 25p though I never had that book - nor did I have stripy socks!

note that there are 3 copies in LT, and two of those belong to members of this group! an increasingly common occurence!
and byzanne, the price of the puffin book of photography was a shocking 95p!

New cover! The other America : poverty in the United States. Seems to have been an influential book in its time - there is a conversation on the Progressive & Liberal! group which mentions it. Any one read it? Have anything to say about the cover?

New cover! The Horse's Mouth is on my tbr list as I have recently read the first part of the trilogy Herself Surprised and have just begun To be a pilgrim which I am enjoying. I love the Stanley Spencer cover - it captures the spirit of the two characters to which it refers, Sara Monday and her artist lover Gulley Jimson. What is the name of the painting?

Ah, now we have Cousin Bette - I like paintings of ladies reading - they always look so absorbed and ladylike. You never see one with her mouth gaping open, or sucking her thumb, or biting her nails, or scratching her scalp, all things I do when reading. Their posture is usually good. Occasionally, one will be lying about with no clothes, reading away but they are probably not in a draught. Please tell us the artist and title of the painting, if you have this info to hand...

it was a detail from 'La Lecture' by Henri Fantin-Latour, it's gone now but it's here http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j303/keirh/1978PenguinBalzacCousinBette.jpg - the first time I came across his work was on New Order's Power, Corruption And Lies LP in 1983 http://www.worldinmotion.net/neworder/discography/albums/1983/PCL.jpg

Nice to see a new cover! I feared that the life of this group was moving peacefully towards its close.
17bencritchley
Is there any life left in it now though, I wonder?

that "Applied Geography" cover is wonderful, even though I have no idea how it could possibly relate to the book's content, it seems fitting

I think the red concentric circles are a map floating over an aerial view of a landscape - it is good, isn't it? I wouldn't mind a new one, though!
21bencritchley
think that was a hint?
22keir
oops sorry, yeah, I didn't notice, getting better at checking at doing it more often, will get better still!

Thanks, keir. Looks like something out of Dr. Who, but I'm not complaining. ;-)

nothing in that picture appears to be cooked...
