Hi all

For those in or able to access Melbourne, one of my old favourites - Basement Books downstairs from Elizabeth Street - is finally closing down. They are apparently havinga sale until the end of April. Hmmm ... must look at teh claendar and find a good excuse to go to town "for a meeting".

Downstairs from Elizabeth Street?

Yes. At the end of the first block up from Flinders Street Melbourne (in Elizabeth Street), there is a small coffee shop and down the stairs, in the basement, is Basement Books. They've been there some years and they've been a great souce of credit card slips for me over those years with both very old crime and mystery books (which I collect) and lots of Renaissance Europe and Tudor/Stuart Engalnd history books which are my secret passions :)

#4> Isn't that the Sydney Basement Books? Seller of inexpensive remainders? (And awfully dangerous to walk past, my wallet is usually fine afterwards but where do I put all the books???)

The Melbourne Basement Books' website is at: http://www.citybasementbooks.com.au/

Yes the Sydney store - double the temptation now - I'm off to see what the Melbourne store has that I "need"

I heard a few more things about the closure.
one, that on the last day, everything in the shop was $1. another, that there were loads of books in a skip after the closure.
and finally, from the ladies who run City Basement Books, that they planned to reopen once they have found new premisses.
I hope they do, since they are my favourite bookshop!

I was there around 5-5:30pm, they were $1.
Shame about the books in the skip. I remember overhearing while in line the person ahead of me asking about them and being told left overs would be pickedup by other shops.

it's been a few months now, has anyone heard any news about whether basement books has found new premises?

from the email:
"CITY BASEMENT BOOKS has moved into a shiny new basement...They will be open from this coming MONDAY, DECEMBER 13 and their trading hours will be the same as they were in past abodes "

you can find their address etc by googling them i guess. i'd include it, but am not sure if that would break the rules for advertising.

(i am in no way affiliated with them, i just miss browsing)

The new premises are in the basement of 342 Flinders St.

Last tweet I saw from them (@CityBasement) they were saying that they were flooded again!

The tweet before that said that they expected to be open next week.
