Hi,
I'm looking for movies, tv shows, and video games that have been made into successful books. I'm NOT looking for novelizations. A good example is Star Wars. There are a ton of books that go beyond the movies. Are there any others?

I'd like to make a bulletin board guessing game for my library, but if they're all books-into-movies, it won't be much fun. I already have Peter Pan, which is a trick question because it was a play, then a book, then a movie.

Thanks!

There is, of course, the Star Trek books, and some stuff from the Olsen Twins and ...

There are a few Scholastic and Nick Jr series, like The Magic School Bus and Dora the Explorer that have spawned chapter books, picture books, online games, etc. Lots of Disney readers based on the animated films have branched into massive franchises.

Are you also looking for non-fiction? There are companion books to science series like NOVA (e.g. The Nova Space Explorer's Guide: Where to Go and What to See). To the limit is based on an IMAX film.

And there are plenty of novelisation expansions from action movies like Indiana Jones and science fiction shows like Doctor Who - but what sort of age range are you looking at for your guessing game?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm pretty sure Magic School Bus was a book first. I thought about including Dora, but I think any picture books with animation stills for illustrations will be a dead giveaway. I'll look into some of the Disney lines to see if there's anything suitable. Perhaps that fairy series that David Christiana illustrates. Although, that's based on Peter Pan, and so wasn't really a movie first.

My library is in a school for grades prek to 6, but this board will be primarily aimed at grades 3 through 6 (ages 8 to 12).

Thanks, all!

I checked - you are right about Magic School Bus being a book first - my apologies!

Pokemon was originally a video game but is now a book and movie franchise. They might have heard of Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (which was first a radio series). There are also several franchises based on comics, which could give you another avenue to explore (particularly those that were French comics that might not be so well known as such like the smurfs, tin tin, etc). Most of the disney stuff is actually based on folklore rather than a book per se - how about Pocahontas - that was the first one based on a real historical character.

Most of the rest I know of probably aren't appropriate for the age range. Good luck!
