I'm reading books based on authors birthplaces, rather than locations in novels, as those sometimes go all over the place. I'm counting books read at the start of 2010, and continuing from there:
visited 6 states:
Austria: Chess Story - Stefan Zweig
England: Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons
France: Around the World in 80 Days - Jules Verne
Germany: The Pigeon - Patrick Suskind
Italy: Silk - Alessandro Baricco
Russia: Notes from the Underground - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Scotland: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

6. France: Around the World in Eighty Days - Jules Verne
Whilst mainly about the travels of an Englishman, it is written by a Frenchman, and also includes a French servant, who is the servant of Fogg. Great and quick read.

From a French author writing about an Englishman, to an Italian writing about a Frenchman, this is exactly why I chose to go by author birthplace rather than book locations because it is getting a bit confusing with all this switching around of nationalities and such. Anyway, this was a quick read, got two books read within one day, both applicable to this challenge, so that was very good.
