Several of us have been reading Josephine Tey's The Daughter of Time and/or The Franchise Affair recently, and it seemed like a good idea to continue the Tey appreciation with a group read of her novel Brat Farrar.

Everyone is welcome to join us. We're going to begin reading on March 15.

Please keep this thread spoiler free - and make yourself at home on the discussion thread, where spoilers are welcome.

I've put down March 15 as a start date to give those of us doing January group reads plenty of time to finish them, and to give people time to get hold of the book.

If that date isn't going to work for people, we can easily change it. :)

I am excited about this one!

I'll join in - it's ages since I read Brat Farrar!

I had never heard of Josephine Tey before, but I would like to give it a go. Do I need to read any of her other books before attempting this one?

I have this in my TBR, so this is good incentive for me to read it. Count me in.

#6 No, you don't need to read anything else first. This one is a standalone rather than part of a series.

ETA - Glad to have you all on board!

I will not be participating in the group read of Brat Farrar since I just re-read it last year (and have way too many other books going on right now), but I do hope you all enjoy it!

I've read this one about twenty times (can you tell it's a favorite?)! Can't join in this time, but I'd also recommend Tey's "The Franchise Affair."

I found my copy of the book. Yea!

I've read most of Tey's mysteries but not this one. Count me in!!

March 15th sounds good as there are a lot of other reads going on now.

I need to check but I think I bought Brat Farrar for my Kindle last year and never got around to it.

Updated: Yes, I do have a Kindle copy of it.

As I mentioned to linda on my thread--Brat Farrar is one of the two Tey's I haven't read so I will mark my calendar for March 15--and try not to get over committed for that month. :-) Thanks CatyM for the link so I could find this.

The other one I haven't read is Franchise Affair. Since y'all have read that one maybe I will try to to find time to read it while I'm waiting for March.

This is great. I have the book and planned to read it sometime this year for my 1010 challenge. Looking forward to this!

This sounds great CaryM. Count me in. I will be ready to go on March 15th.
Thank you for getting this going for all of us.

I have an extra copy of Brat Farrar. If anyone needs one, send me a PM. Due to a restricted budget, I would prefer to send only to USA or Canada - sorry!

Also, if anyone would like to read this as an ebook, I believe you can download it for free here:

I love Josephine Tey, here detective novels were always different from the standard formula that most authors use. I look forward to the conversation on this great book.

This is coming up fast. I'm looking forward to the start, on March 15th.

I have that week off--I may actually have time to read and participate! I'm looking forward to it, too. Is this the thread we will post comments on?

Thanks, Caty--I have it starred now. Your link was a big help!

Is the assumption that we start discussion as though we've all finished reading on 15 March, or are we going to discuss parts? I know it's not that long a book compared to some group read books.

24Eat_Read_Knit
Mar 6, 2010, 5:36 pm

My feeling is that it's not long enough that we need to divide into parts, but that it might be a good idea to set aside some reading time.

How would people feel about setting aside a week from the 15th for reading and start discussion on the 22nd? Or would it be better just to start discussion from the 15th and each join in as and when we each finish the book?

25DeltaQueen50
Mar 6, 2010, 6:26 pm

I have to go out of town on the 9th and won't be back until around the 22nd. No internet access!! I am taking the book and will catch up with the posts when I return.

I'll go with whatever the group decides! I have the book from the library, and I'll probably start it in a few days. It's a collection of three stories, so I'll probably do Miss Pym Disposes and The Franchise Affair right after I finish Brat Farrar!

Hi,

I'm not a 75 challenger but couldn't resist this challenge after everything I've been reading about Tey recently! I have ordered the book and starred the thread so will hopefully be ready to join in the discussion. Starting on the 22nd makes sense to me but I don't really mind either way!

Hi Dee

Does anyone object to going for start of discussion on 22 March, as it seems to work for several of us who've indicated?

29avatiakh
Mar 7, 2010, 4:54 am

I'm fine with that, I have the book and am ready to start reading around the 15th.

I'll order the book today, and hopefully I'll be able to join in the discussion the 22nd. If not, I'll just avoid the spoiler thread until I'm done.

32flissp
Mar 8, 2010, 7:39 am

I'm fine with the 22nd - it gives me a chance to catch up on other stuff in the meantime...

33Eat_Read_Knit
Mar 8, 2010, 1:54 pm

That seems pretty unanimous: we'll start discussion on the 22nd, then.

I read the first two pages this afternoon. I've put a ridiculous number of books in my current reading pile but will prioritise Brat Farrar next week.

I've read a few more pages but will prioritise it from tomorrow.
