this is a copy of Group: Book talk topic: LibraryThing language codes

----

Dear friends;

Is there a LibraryThing url with the list of languages used and the correspondence of the language codes?

If not please create such a help page. Thanks in advance!

How are the language codes selected? Please compare:

+ chi http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=chi
- zho http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=zho

- deu http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=deu
+ ger http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=ger

+ ice http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=ice
- isl http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=isl

- ron http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=ron
+ rum http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=rum

Should these equivalents be real LibraryThing search equivalents?

note: There are some political disputes about the usage of the identifier
« mol » http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=mol
Please see some examples at:
/catalog/gangleri&language=mol:
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/gangleri&language=mol
catalog/gangleri&originallanguage=mol
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/gangleri&originallanguage=mol

Best regards Reinhardt

additional question:

How are LibraryThing language codes relates to Worldcat language codes ?

You can find the language-specific LibraryThing sites at
http://www.librarything.com/zeitgeist/language

(click on each language to see a display about the site, and whether it uses a TLD like
http://www.librarything.de
or a subdomain like
http://cz.librarything.com )

I think the OP is referring to the language codes used in cataloguing (for language, original language).

My problem is I am working at many sites and all are using different language codes:

neither « fre » http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=fre nor
« ger » http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=ger are valid Ethnologue 16 language codes.

special:AllPages/Portal:a at http://www.omegawiki.org/special:AllPages/Portal:a is listing Ethnologue codes only; two letter WikiMedia Foundation project codes are only used for redirects. In order to be fair I want to address also the issue of language codes used by the WikiMedia Foundation project codes which conflict with Ethnologue.

----

What I would like to have / what I am searching for is a page with a correspondance table showing unique fileds:
1. langueage name (in English)
2. language code used at LibraryThing
3. any unique identifier (one can use a better identifier then Ethnologue if such are available) allowing to build an interproject mapping table.

>1 gangleri:: Is there a LibraryThing url with the list of languages used and the correspondence of the language codes?

We should be awaere that book sources are using different language code:

For French we have a difference between LibraryThing and WorldCat:

#1: LibraryThing is using fra
#2: WorldCat is using fre

#2a: no results are showsn for: WorldCat au:Golden, Bernard ln:fra http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=au%3AGolden%2C+Bernard&fq=ln%3Afra

#2b: 12 data records are showsn for WorldCat au:Golden, Bernard ln:fre http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=au%3AGolden%2C+Bernard&fq=ln%3Afre

links:
sil.org id=fra http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=fra
see ethnologue.com code=fra http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=fra
sil.org id=fre http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=fre
