most of the manga that I read is shoujo too.

For shoujo my hands down favorite is Fruits Basket. I discovered the manga in the middle of its run, soon after the anime was released (around vol 8 or so) and spent the next 4 years wildly theorizing after every chapter. I loved that there was so much meat to it - that even after analyzing it to pieces and trying to figure things out - even then the rug would get pulled out from under you repeatedly. Rereading it you wonder how you never realized you were getting beaten over the head with clues. Ah, I love Fruits Basket, so near to my little heart.

I also love Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (and her other works, but that one in particular), and Minto na Bokura by the Marmalade Boy author (who IMHO is better at comedy than angsty tween love dodecahedrons.) I don't think they released that one in English, but if they did, someone please let me know so I can look for it.

I love Here is Greenwood's quirkiness and subtle charicterizations. (No, really!)

Ten years ago I commented on my then-blog that at the rate CLAMP was going they wouldn't finish X until I was 30... yeah...
I haven't read CLAMP since X and Gouhou Drug went on hiatus, but I enjoyed those two and Clover and Card Captor Sakura.

My favorite author is Tachibana Kaimu who doesn't write shoujo per se (cross-gen and the occasional mild BL). I think her only English manga is Pieces of a Spiral, but she did Shinesman which had a short and hilarious anime OAV, and I love the Shinesman manga. Her art is BEAUTIFUL and she writes fun stuff with BL subtext that exactly matches my sense of humor and hits every one of my buttons. None of it is easy to read, alas.

When I get around to actually reading my FMA manga I know I will like that, but I can't say I love it when I have been bad and not actually read it yet... (It's not shoujo anyway, technically.)

I love Fruits Basket too. I actually just finished reading the entire series in December. I had read the first 20 or so books before but I was finally able to read the last few volumes :)

Do you read Japanese manga as well as English?

ok, I've watched anime marked as OVA before, but what does that mean?

9PhoenixTerran
Ene 11, 2010, 4:23 pm

8> Basically it means that it was a direct-to-video production. I believe it stands for "original video animation" and you'll sometimes see it written as OAV, too.

Ene 11, 2010, 5:01 pm

>7 macsbrains:

Yes, I read in both, though I am far from fluent. When I first got into manga there was very little available in English, so I got the Japanese ones instead. (They were much cheaper, too.) I self-taught from manga, and used that to eventually minor in Japanese in college.

I get my favorites in English because I want the fully absorbed reading experience. I still miss a lot of nuance in the Japanese versions.

11novelandmangacrazy
Ene 28, 2010, 9:16 pm

Unfortunately I don't speak or read Japanese. I'm sure that the original versions of the books are probably better then the English translated versions.

Most of my manga is in English, but I do have some in French. The only reason that I have some in French is because my friend gave it to me and I was able to get a really great price on them before Christmas ($1.25 each)

probably less as OAV these days... used to see it more often way back when, but almost never nowadays...

i used to prefer the OAV designation over OVA (because OVA makes me think of... well... ovum)... but apparently OAV also stands for Original Adult Video.... porn.

I don't understand the praise for Kimi ni Todoke. It seems pretty average to me - better than most, but not particularly amazing. Y'all who love it, can you explain why you like it so much?

I don't understand the love for Gakuen Alice, either. I tried it but it became really boring once it got all melodramatic and left behind the humor from the early parts.

(Then again, I can't really think of any shoujo that I truly adore, though I might could point out some if I look at a list of the shoujo I've read. There's one about West Asian peoples (in the Pakistan,Afghanistan area?), where the main girl is 18 and from a traveling clan and is married to a 12 year old boy whose clan is in a village which I'm enjoying right now. Can't recall the name, though.)

20HatsumiShinogu
mayo 9, 2010, 1:12 am

Actually, I am not crazy about Kimi ni Todoke as the others are. I realize how popular it is and the fact that it is a fan favorite however I cannot say it is my top favorite. I just happen to enjoy each volume more and more.
I do find Kazehaya and Sawako adorable but again, I wouldn't say they are my favorite.
I am not sure either why people are crazy about this particular shoujo but I cannot say it is bad either. I am finding myself enjoying it more and more with each volume, which is good. It just makes me anticipate what is coming next.

As for Gakuen Alice, I like it a lot too, though I can see the drama is intensifying. It is a good shoujo, IMO. At least, it is not one of your typical shoujo and this is how I like my manga. Actually, I am bored of typical shoujo stories.

lol. maybe it's the mediocrity that i love. there are a ton of shoujo manga out there in which relationships fall apart and become angsty because of misunderstandings. kimi ni todoke makes the misunderstandings the central theme and brings something positive out of it; i can't say it's completely clean of potential sadness.. misunderstanding is the central theme, after all, but they bring pretty good humor into it. the supporting characters have so far been pretty great in their roles, and i love 'em. since i mostly read (and prefer to read) shoujo, this is one of those breaths of fresh air. maybe this is the same reason that i adore karekano, although, for that, the central theme is "the real self" instead of the misunderstanding (it does get angsty with the whole arima-mama thing, though _-_).

i'm not really much into gakuen alice; i gave the first couple of volumes a try when it first came out, and i was rather eh about it. i prefer m to n no shouzou by the same mangaka.

i think i know the story you're talking about with the traveling clan. i thought that was actually under a shounen or a seinen label.

22keristars
mayo 10, 2010, 6:11 pm

Oh, I liked Karekano pretty okay. especially compared to Kimi ni Todoke. the thing is... I keep reading Kimi ni Todoke every time a new chapter gets a fan translation, so I don't hate it or anything (I'm about ready to claw my eyes out rather than read yet another chapter of Skip Beat!, because the latest plot thread is just too much, and I really don't like the angular art style), I just don't understand the praise it gets. I guess maybe I tend to prefer the stories where the getting-the-confession isn't the goal of the plot but rather the beginning. I've been thinking about it further, and my favorite shoujo stories are the ones where the characters don't end up with the person they were first dating, like Cat Street. (oops, spoiler) Uhm, Strobe Edge is another that I look forward to reading.

Also, huh, I just looked it up - it's Otoyomegatari and it IS seinen. I found it in a list of shoujo manga, and didn't check the name of the magazine it runs in or genre labels or anything. It's really good, though, lots of scenery porn and several consecutive pages without any dialogue bubbles at all. I really love it when graphic novels have scene that progress the story and have actual things occurring, but don't force dialogue. I love scenery porn and slice-of-life, too.

I guess maybe I'm just not a fan of shoujo (which I probably knew from the beginning - I only started reading titles because I wanted to be familiar with the ones that everyone else is familiar with, like Bleach or Fruits Basket or Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles and so on, but my preference for art styles and plots has leaned towards the seinen and josei slice-of-life stories - of course, there are more fan groups translating shoujo and shounen and BL than the rest, so I end up reading the shoujo anyway).

23purpledragon42
mayo 10, 2010, 6:34 pm

I really like shoujo...which is ironic given that you couldn't get me to touch a "girly" American novel with a 10-foot pole. *snickers* Regardless, I really enjoyed Watase's Imadoki and I bought Hot Gimmick because I ADORED the art style. Another random favorite has always been Pretear, which I liked because of its fairy tale references. I'm sure there are at least a handful more, but those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. ^_^

i am liking strobe edge, since i really rather like ninako's positive outlook... this is another one of those stories that like to drag out, unfortunately. i rather wish that they'd just get on with it. (and i'm glad kimi ni todoke finally got past that.)

skip beat!..... yeah, it looks like another "extend the plot" device. i love the series, but they're dragging it, and she's starting to get unusually giggly. o____O;

otoyomegatari looks pretty from just the cover, and i have it planted into the backlog of things to check out.. i'm glad to hear a good recommendation on it. scenery porn is all good, lol... although there haven't been too much of that in stuff i read... (it's in stuff i watch, mostly.) i get my current slice of life kick from usagi drop, although she's dropping some hints of strangeness with the newer chapters. :o

> 23
imadoki was pretty cute.. i rather liked tanpopo... and it was a nice angst-break after fushigi yuugi and ayashi no ceres... XD

25keristars
mayo 10, 2010, 9:10 pm

>24 lilasia: Oh, no, strangeness in Usagi Drop? That's one of my favorite series, though I haven't read past the first chapter after the time skip. :(

(Usagi Drop led me to Unita's 1-volume story Sukimasuki (Sukima Suki? not sure if there should be a space in the transliteration) which is one of my top 10 favorite books ever, manga or novel or otherwise. And Usagi Drop is one of the first ones that I decided I would actually spend my limited amounts of money on, once it is available in English. It and ARIA. I have to be stingy with my paycheck since I'm in grad school...)

But yes about Otoyomegatari - it's pretty meaty despite not really having an overarching plot, at least that I'm aware of so far. It says a lot without actually using a lot of words, I guess? Facial expressions and body language and consecutive panels with small changes in position or scenery do so much that words aren't needed, like I mentioned before. The character design is really nice, too, with each character being distinct, but without it being comical or overly unrealistic, and there is a lot of really amazing detail in the architecture, textiles, &c, as fitting for the region. And I don't recall seeing a lot of screentones over everything, which is something that annoys me. I've always had a fondness for xxxHolic because of the use of only black or white lines/shapes to suggest shadow or dimension or texture, instead of the hash-mark grey tones clouding the thing, or random cactuses and sombreros in the background to fill the space (actually, I adore that stupid pattern, but it's definitely stupid).

Oh, hey, there's another thing about shoujo that bugs me, the tones. It's probably a sign that this thread isn't one for me to be hanging out in... ;)

I have always been a shoujo fan but I am open to the other genres too. I like shounen, seinen, josei, BL and so on.

My first manga ever was Alice 19th by Yuu Watase, which I didn't like much. I followed it up by Imadoki, which I didn't think it was anything special either. I was reading shoujo only for about a year or two and never thought of reading shounen or any other genre. Now I am not patient enough for those typical shoujo stories. I am looking for something new and unique.

Kimi ni Todoke, Honey and Clover, NANA, Ouran High School Host Club, Gakuen Alice fit the criteria for me and so I am in love with these series. Sometimes I wonder why NANA is categorized as shoujo. It seems more of a josei to me.

Hot Gimmick has always been my #1 and still is. I am a big fan of Shinogu. While I love the series, I cannot say I am pleased how it ended. I know lots of people hated this particular series and the heroine as well but I loved everything about it except for the ending.

Usagi Drop - this one I liked but not as much as With the Light. Well, I have only read the first volume so maybe I will grow to love it more eventually.

I know this is a shoujo manga thread but I would like to talk about some of the seinen manga I love. Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys, Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka, and Monster are my favorites of the genre. 20th Century Boys is one of the titles I anticipate the most and keep waiting for new volumes to come out.

I think I still prefer Usagi Drop to Sukima Suki. I'm still in the process of going through the rest of her works. I like the simplistic style and feel that she uses. As for the hints of strangeness.. it really is mostly just a hint for now. For a quiet series, I think there really is still quite a bit going on, especially with Rin grown up now as life continues. I'm very much liking one of the events taking place, although a little iffy on others. I still wonder how this one is supposed to end....

> 29
i wonder if you would like "piece", by ashihara hinako. i'm just reading it now, but the air of mystery is rather interesting... the story basically starts at the funeral of a 19-year-old girl who never really had many friends in high school and was only known to have been picked on. in any case, one of her classmates ends up trying to investigate her past, since the mother believes she had a boyfriend in high school... with each classmate, a little piece of the puzzle comes to light, but the protagonist doesn't quite know right away if the clue is leading her forward or spinning her in a circle. anyway... it's interesting so far. i guess this still falls into the nostalgia aspect that i like. ^^;

I tried reading Otomen this weekend because of the comment in this thread, but found it overwhelmingly ... cloying, I think is the word? I wanted to try to get deeper into it, because of the statement that it improves, but the presentation of gender role stereotypes in the first two volumes were too much for me, and then on top of that, all the shoujo flowers and sparklies and whatnot. I don't know how folks stick out a series that doesn't start well, when there are so many others to be read. :/

I've been watching Nana with Funimation's On Demand service (it's up to episode 8 now), and have been thinking about reading the manga, since I generally prefer manga to anime. But I'm worried that it's going to be like Skip Beat! where it starts out really good, but eventually falls into a rut of "must keep churning out chapters, here's some more angst, and more story-extenders that take years to finish and thus advance the plot". Any comments on that?

From Eroica With Love vol. 1 and Paradise Kiss vol. 1! Shoujo usually doesn't appeal very much to me, especially the high-school or romance type ones, with a few exceptions - Ouran and Paradise Kiss and a couple others. (I mean, my favorite all-time manga are ARIA, Yostubato!, Mushishi, Zetsubou-Sensei, Gunslinger Girl, and Unita Yume's series... not much shoujo angst to be found in the lot. Gunslinger Girl and Zetsubou-Sensei have angst, but of a totally different sort.)

I agree about Please Save My Earth being good! I wasn't really sure about it, but I kept reading it, and it really stands out in my memory, so clearly there's something about it... I was so disappointed when it was put on hold but I have a feeling Ai Yazawa might decide to continue it at some point. I do believe this particular series is not for everyone. One of the things that made me like it is the unpredictability factor. After reading 20 volumes of the manga, I still cannot tell what is going to happen or who is going to end up with who.

>40 lilasia:

I, too, love Yotsubato! I just love Yotsuba and Koiwai-san. Umm, I am not sure if I should ask this but I keep thinking that something might happen between Koiwai-san and Fuuka? Did you get this impression too?

43keristars
Editado: mayo 18, 2010, 12:26 am

RE: Koiwai and Fuka - no way! there's some teasing and possibly flirting going on, but it feels to me more like an oni-san thing. I'm very doubtful that there will be any romantic entanglements beyond Jumbo's candle for Asagi, unless it's a new character, and not a major plot thread. I could see it being referred to or mentioned obliquely, the way Yostuba's box keeps changing as time passes and things happen, but it's just there, because it's supposed to be, and attention isn't drawn to it specifically or anything.

A center-stage romance would completely change the tone of the series, I think. But that might also be my preference - I don't want any romance for Koiwai, unless it's quiet and not a big deal. Anything to do with him and Asagi or Fuka wouldn't fit that, simply because they're all too close to Yostuba, and she would make it into a huge thing, because that's what she does.

I'm really happy with the tone of the series, and the focus on Yotsuba and her interactions with the world. Anything we see with the adults of neighbors is because it's to do with Yostuba. And that's the way it ought to be.

(On the other hand, Usagi Drop, which is in many ways similar to Yostubato!, leaves me with a different impression. I'd be happy to see how Daikichi and Ren do with a serious love interest for Daikichi while she's still in elementary, though it sounds like if that ever happens, it's not until after the time skip, when she's in high school. But Usagi Drop is more about Daikichi (the Koiwai role) than it is about Ren (the Yostuba role - also, heh, both girls are explicitly named after plants, I just realized).)

44HatsumiShinogu
mayo 18, 2010, 4:06 am

It is not that I wish for anything to happen between Koiwai and Fuuka but I just got this impression that there might be some kind of affection or something between the two. Well, it is obvious Koiwai doesn't see her that way but I was thinking that she might develop a crush on him.

As for Usagi Drop, I have read the first volume that has been published by Yen Press and liked it. Honestly, I didn't like it as much as I did With the Light but I am pretty sure it will grow on me. I love slice of life.

1) Parfait Tic by Nanaji Nagamu

2) Ouran High School Host Club

I read all of Parfait Tic in UNDER 24 hours. I would guess that that was about 100 chapters at the time.

It was the art that drew me in, not the story. Suddenly I was an awe-struck little girl again! Actually, I had a children's book of Barbie art when I was little and I was fascinated with it for the longest time. It was SO PRETTY. And then there was Sailor Moon which got me into anime in the first place... Parfait Tic's art reminded me so much of all of that. So of course I love it! I read it now just to look at it. xD

Is that the Chou Yo Hana Yo by Yoshihara Yuki? I've always had a soft spot for Yoshihara's stuff, though it's usually pretty silly. Well, not so much the supernatural stories - more the sex comedies. There's something about that shiny-butt mini version of the main characters that is unexpectedly endearing. Yes, that's the one. This is the first series I read by this mangaka and I am finding it endearing myself. It has been a long time since I have read a shoujo/josei with sex scenes. I guess Kaikan Phrase by Mayu Shinju was the last shoujo I've read that has explicit sex scenes.

lol, i loved parfait tic! when it first started.. before i went on a manga hiatus... i was surprised to get back to it and find out that the overall story was actually like dawson's creek... will joey be with pacey or with dawson!? not saying that ichi or daiya are one or the other, specifically, but just situation-wise.

i've been meaning to read chou you hana yo, but i keep skipping on it for other titles. i might have to move it up the list since you guys mention it. :3

i really like hapi mari... and it made me start reading all the rest of enjouji maki's stuff.. although her stories are hit or miss for me, even if most of them have the same feel.. the guys are fairly domineering to the soft, confused women.. that i don't even know how they ended up with some of these guys. XD;

In general I like her stuff. I only read the beginning of that one (though I have them all, just haven't gotten around to it.) Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is my favorite by her.

Well I guess these were already mentioned but these are really the only shoujo manga I have ever started so that would make them my favorite I suppose as I do enjoy them ~

kimi ni todoke
maid sama!

It's a recent venture!

Kitchen Princess
V.B. Rose
Beauty Pop
Dengeki Daisy (and pretty much all works by the mangaka)
Aoi Kiseki
Rensou no Aria
Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen
Bloody Kiss
Maid-sama
Kingyo Sou
Akuma to Dolce
Princess Tutu
Hatenkou Yuugi
Happy Cafe

Some of these aren't printed in English copies yet so I suggest checking them out online would be best.

55> I kind of like it, but the art shifts as Fujiwara's style develops, and some of the characters are hardly recognizable in their later forms as they are early on, which is kind of disappointing. I really liked the beginning bits, and the latest ones aren't as interesting to me. I think maybe I feel that it should have ended a long time ago (especially since there was one arc that was didn't seem to have much purpose at all, except to drag the story out a bit). I guess I have the same problem with it that I have with Kimi ni Todoke (starts out with a decent premise and art, then drags too long).

Watase Yuu's stuff is very shoujo.

I thought so, but hadn't read it myself, and I was doing a lot of poking at manga series last night (checking for combination/separation stuff) and doubted my memory. I do know about Bleach, though! :P

That makes me think of Fushigi Yuugi by Yuu Watase. When I read it a few years ago I would have much preferred that it would end after volume 13 (I believe) and not 18.

Red River by Chie Shinohara is something I have really enjoyed and it is one of the best shoujo I have ever read. Some might compare it to Fushigi Yuugi but I find it to be much more better. At least, the heroine is not as annoying as Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi. Too bad not many good shoujo get licensed or are created these days.

I think it was moe kare
The female mc was kinda annoying but it was sweet overall
