I'm curious about what sort of books people in this group collect? At the moment, I'm collecting books on religion and spirituality, focusing mainly on Eastern schools, though I have a bit on Western religion. In terms of literature I recently started collecting LoA, and am looking into collecting Everyman and/or Modern Library as well.

I collect Library of Indiana Classics; Applewood Press editions of Nancy Drew books; books by and about May Sarton; books about US presidents, especially Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt; books by and about Eleanor Roosevelt; books about the Civil War and about the Lewis and Clark Expedition; books by and about Ernest Shackleton and other polar explorers; cookbooks; Barnes & Noble Collector Editions (the hardbacks that are the size of a mass market paperback).

Actually, I guess the truth is that I collect anything that I happen to see and like. ;-)

I just started collecting. I've started with Richard Dawkins and in the process of it found Folio Society which I know is going to hurt my credit card as I have just joined. is £175 for limited edition Moby Dick worth it, hell I don't know but it will looks stunning in a bookshelf I guess.

I have a modest (but slowly growing) collection of Hector Berlioz biographies. Whenever I get the chance to pick up a reference work for Book History, I do so, but I wouldn't really call that a collection.

I guess I should mention I also collect books on books, my collection started with Basbanes. I've "started" my ML collection with a copy of Varieties of Religious Experience by William James, and am looking forward on getting my hands on more of these wonderful volumes. Don't have any Everyman yet though.

I have collected books by or about the Inklings (CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, et al), though I am not obsessive about having everything. I have also accumulated quite a number of Everyman editions and Ladybird books. I collect old editions of Oxford dictionaries, particularly The Concise Oxford Dictionary, and am starting to collect different editions of The Hunting of the Snark.

Mrs Bookworm collects older children's books, to the point where the physical structure of the house may soon be threatened.

Somehow or other I've acquired small(ish) collections of Folio Society and Easton Press books, but I hesitate to call myself a collector of them, maybe because they are fairly easy to "encounter" where I live.

It feels much more like active collecting in the case of Le Club français du livre--I'm wanting especially the books with Dada and surrealism-inspired bindings; Insel-Bücherei (a true obsession); El Acantilado (another obsession); Sellerio and Il melangolo; Biblioteka Vjeverica (children's, 1950s-1990s); and several series from the Northwestern University Press.

I've also discovered pop-ups on LT (thanks, lilithcat!), and I'll take any Rex Stout in sixties/seventies paperback you can throw at me.

I collect books written by Darwins: Dr. Erasmus, Charles, Sir Francis, Emma, whomever.

Also, and I do not pretend that these tastes are compatible, books on alchemy.

I'm probably the oldest (80) and most dispersive of the contributors to this thread.
I'm interested in: Fine and Private press books (mostly Italian and with financial limitations), a very few nice bindings, one solitary Aldine,- books about books and libraries - art (many exhibition catalogues, but also multi-volume histories), the Bible, history (specially WW2 and Shoah), mathematics for the non specialist. I own quite a few fiction books, but now I'm less interested in them. My languages are Italian, French, Italian and Roumanian, with some volumes in Hebrew, which I don't really know.

My collections are eclectic and listed on my home page and website--Yarington.com. Does anyone collect Horatio Alger?

I mostly collect Science Fiction and Fantasy hardcover first editions (about a thousand are signed or inscribed) but also have a lot of paperback editions (Ace, Daw, etc). I also collect illustrated books and especially like volumes that are sketched/signed by the artist. I also dabble in horror or other fantastic fiction, have most of the magazines that are related and my original Conan the Barbarian collection from when I was a kid (Marvel through about issue 150, Savage Sword and Savage Tales) and other ephemera from my childhood. I have a lot of graphic novels, many obscure or small press (worked in comics for a while as an illustrator, inker and colorist). I use LT to both catalog my collection (due to multiple editions of the same book) and organize the many boxes (if you look at my tags you'll see that each box, bookcase or shelf has a separate tag so I can quickly find any book).

Primarily, I collect hardcovers of authors I like in the science fiction, fantasy and mystery genres. I also try to "cherry pick" one or more copies of the true first editions of new, well-reviewed authors in those genres for fun, bragging rights and, possibly, profit somewhere down the road if I can ever let a book go (hence the multiple copies purchased, so I can maybe sell one in the future; maybe). Then I try to have fun tracking down authors to get them to sign their/my books. This does require a bit of detective work sometimes as many authors/publishers are slow to put up tour date information, or the authors don't sell enough to warrant a tour, so one has to be vigilant regarding book festivals, conventions, etc.

I have also recently decided to start collecting (and actually reading, heh) Norse mythology-related fiction, as I grew up on a steady diet of Thor, et al., in comics and in books from my Danish grandmother.
