Barnes & Noble nook

Well it's here. BN's competition for the Kindle. I have a Sony ebook reader, so I can't buy from Amazon or B&N.

I'm still trying to get a look at the Nook. When I was in B&N today they said they would have a demo model available next week. If I was to order one today it wouldn't be delivered until late in January at the earliest.

Sounds a lot like what happened with the Kindle when it first came out.

I also have a Sony. Did you get the free firmware upgrade? I did it in order to get the ePub capability. What's interesting is that the B&N eBooks will also be in ePub. The thought is that I'd be able to buy from B&N in addition to the Sony Store.

I have the new touch screen Sony 600. I think it already has the ePub firmware

#2 I'm not sure Sony users can buy from BnN. IIRC BnN are using a very recent Epub Version that isn't compatable with Sony's Epub version. It's all to do with adobe's DRM.

I've still got the old Sony 500. Three years and still going strong. I hate Sony when it comes to DRM on their media, but they do make excellent hardware and support it even when it's out of warranty.

I just wanted to say that I received a Nook for Valentines Day and I, who had never even been interested in e-reading, was amazed. While I would never part with my physical library, I had a good time loading all the classics from Gutenberg onto it. It's so nice to just have them at my fingertips.

Another awesome point was being able to rent e-books from the library and easily load them onto my Nook. Piece of cake and I don't have to worry about having any late fees.

I don't really have anything to say in regards to how it stacks up to other e-readers but the Nook has been a good experience so far.

A 2015 6th edition is available of The Nook Book, paperback, 406 pages, by Patrick Kanouse, published by Que. Full US price is $19.99

It calls itself an unofficial guide to Nook e-book readers. Its Hardware/Software scope includes the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook, NOOK Glowlight, and Nook Reading Apps.

I think of it as an owner's manual. Earlier editions of this book include other NOOK hardware versions, such as NOOK Color, NOOK Tablet, NOOK HD, etc.
