New Anne book by LM Montgomery

I just found out about this today and thought this group might be interested.

I'm very excited about this book, and got a gift certificate for Christmas, so am heading over to the bookstore soon to pick it up. Have you read it yet Elizabeth or anyone?

No, I have not read it. I am number one on the list at my library. Libraries take a little longer to get the books out because they have to be processed.

I followed the link in #1 and it says at the end of the post that the book is only being published in Canada for the time being. They give a link to the Canadian Amazon website and the book IS available there. Just FYI.

Hopefully it be published in the US soon. There are plenty of "Yankee" Anne fans too!

I just ordered mine from Amazon. While I haven't heard the best things about it...I'm something of a completeist and need to satisfy my curiosity.

Sure thing, PollyAnnaHP - has anyone in the US ordered from the Canadian Amazon website? I'd be interested to know how the process went.

I'm considering it. I just placed an order with the US Amazon so it'll have to wait for 2 weeks. ( I only place an order every 2 weeks or so, it's kind of an addiction so I have to limit myself! lol).

My sister came to visit yesterday and brought me the book! Yay!! I've dipped into it already and OH! how lovely it is to read something new by L.M. Montgomery. What a treat :-D

Now the trick is to read it without being rude to my visiting sister ;-)

How wonderful! It gives me a nostalgic thrill to read the chapter titles in the link.

It says the book is a bit darker than LMM usually wrote; is it as good as the rest of her books?

I just ordered my copy from Amazon's Canadian site, it was just as easy as using the U.S. site, I didn't even have to create a new account and it even converted the dollar amount to U.S. currency for me.

The one drawback... shipping was $10.17, which was almost as much as the book itself.

My copy arrived yesterday!! I'm only 42 pages into it so far but I have the rest of the week off so I should be able to finish it by the end of the week. I'll keep ya'll posted .

I picked up my copy a few weeks ago and it's been staring at me from the night stand. I should start reading and we can compare thoughts. :)

sounds good mihess :) I just finished it today! I really enjoyed it, I know most of the short stories have been published previously, but I still enjoyed it. My next project is to go through The Road to Yesterday and several of L.M.M.'s other short story collections. I want to compare the stories, because apparently some of them were previously edited.

While reading through the LT member reviews for the book a few people were annoyed by the fact that in every story Dr. & Mrs. Blythe were referred to quite often. I don't agree, but I believe the fact that I am a historian influences that opinion. What people during our time period don't often realize is that during the time period of "Anne" gossip was a very powerful form of social control, especially by women, who often had very little or no power. Also in smaller communities everyone knew their neighbors, and a Doctor would be held in a certain esteem with the townspeople, therefore it would be only natural that the townspeople would include references to the Blythe family, who were known by many.

I'm not quite sure how anyone came to the conclusion that this book was thought to be the final book in "Anne" series. Other than the poetry Anne reads to her family and their commentary, and the fact that many of the characters include dialogue about the Blythes this book really doesn't finish off the series. Atleast not for me.

That's interesting that you'd comment on the frequent mentions of the Blythes PollyAnnaHP. I've always just accepted that as normal for that time period, and even later. My parents grew up in a small town in the Canadian prairies and I grew up listening to their stories of the town, the people and events that happened. Very similar to L.M. Montgomery's stories in the way certain families are always referred to, especially the minister, the doctor, the town clerk.

It's a lovely book isn't it? Just a treasure. I've been finishing up another book (and I'm a very slow reader) so haven't had a chance to read it all through yet, but I'm enjoying it.

Well, to be fair, I can see how the Blythes "being quoted" is annoying. You see, Montgomery actually had already previously written & published many of the stories in The Blythes are Quoted and she went back and edited them and inserted references to the Blythes afterward. That then makes me want to compare them to the stories as originally published. Anyway, I don't much like it as the final book in the Anne series either....Rilla is enough for me anyway.

#21 - I could be mis-remembering, but I think I read that the stories that were originally published were severely edited, and this book is closer to the stories as originally written.

I haven't read the book yet; partly still working through my TBR piles, including some recent acquisitions of the 'Anne' series, and partly I'd have to ship in a hardback, so I'm holding off on that for a while.

It is ninth book of the Anne series.
